Samsung Xpress SL-M2880FW Laser Multifunction Printer

I have a Samsung SL-M2880FW which came with Easy Print Manager 2.0.1.245 and has been working for years. It still prints, but has recently stopped scanning. The all-in-one acts like it is going to scan (wakes up) but almost immediately the application displays the following error;
"The requested image could not be scanned. Please, check if your scanner is connected properly. If your system does not have enough memory, please, try to reduce the image resolution or size."
It does not matter if I try flatbed or ADF. I have 4.6GB of available memory (all resources are reasonable). I've rebooted everything and checked cables but no luck.

I found it - message was accurate. Despite the image being B&W and maximum B&W DPI being 600, it some how had been set to 2400. I lowered it to 600 and scanned. I went back and you can't set it higher than 600 (not sure how it could have become 2400).

Ran HP Support Assistant, but it has lots of broken links and did little to help.
I did manage to update drivers and apps (eg EPM is now 2.0.1.35).
Still not scanning.

When you state 4.6 gigs are you referring to memory or harddrive space? 4.6 gigs of harddrive is too little to allow proper operation of a computer.
