My HP Officejet Pro 6978 All-in-One printer's fax send is not working.  The message says that the fax component is "damaged," although I don't know how.  It won't reset by itself.  I did not try reinstalling the software, since there may be a hardware problem.  All other functions--printer, copy, and scan are fine.

Hi @mrmike5,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're experiencing an issue with the fax component of your HP Officejet Pro 6978 All-in-One printer. If the message indicates that the fax component is "damaged," it could indeed be a hardware issue. However, before jumping to conclusions, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try.

  • Restart the Printer: Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary issues. Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for a few minutes, then plug it back in and turn it on.
  • Check Fax Settings: Make sure that all fax settings are correctly configured. Verify that the phone line is properly connected to the correct port on the printer.
  • Test the Phone Line: Ensure that the phone line connected to the printer is functioning properly. You can do this by connecting a telephone to the same phone line and checking for a dial tone.
  • Update Firmware: Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer. Sometimes, firmware updates can fix bugs and improve the performance of the device.
  • Factory Reset: If none of the above steps work, you can try performing a factory reset on the printer. Keep in mind that this will reset all settings to their default values, so make sure to note down any custom settings you have before proceeding.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
