I also have the hp enby 5530 printer that will not scan or copy.  I have downloaded the suggested firmware update in the earlier posts.  I have attempted to update it to my printer but it won't update. Says the update had failed to turn the printer off and then on again and reupdate. I have done this several times, with no results.  I have called the teck support. They wanted to charge me $19.99 for any further support?  Suggested I buy a new printer.  This printer has not been used much and prints from my computer. It wasn't cheap and I don't want to buy another but if I do, it won't be a hp!

Hello, @ph57 – Hope you are well 🙂

Thanks for reaching out. This is a great place to find the help you need, from other users, HP experts, and other support personnel!

Going through your post, it looks like a scanner failure issue with your printer. That is the reason the printer can print but cannot make a scan or copy. This happens when the printer gets insufficient power to the scanner or when there is a mechanical issue with the printer scanner mechanism. Try the steps mentioned below to try and fix the issue:

  • Remove the cartridges from the printer.
  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Remove USB cable, if present.
  • Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
  • Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle and then try making a copy.

If the steps mentioned in the document fails to resolve the issue, I am afraid the issue could be with the printer hardware. I would suggest you contact HP phone support to set up a service for the printer.

You can visit http://www.support.hp.com/contact-hp and fill in your product details to get the tech support number.

If you have any troubles, let me know and I will do my best to help!

Cheers 🙂

I am having the same problems with my HP Envy 5530, and it has been going on for over a year.  I try all the troubleshooting suggestions offered in the forums, then I get frustrated and give up, settling for only the print feature of a product that I paid for expecting it to be an "all-in-one".  I see that the "refuses to copy or scan" problem has been reported within these forums since at least 2014.  Has no one found a real solution yet?

I've also encountered a 5530 that will not copy or scan.  I went through everything that HP recommends without any success then stumbled on an answer at https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/397196/Why+are+the+copy-scan+functions+not+working.  The individual, obviously at wits end, simply lifted up the right side of the printer and dropped it.  I did the same and low and behold it now works fine.  I do occasionally have a hiccup, in that it again stops scanning/copying so I just power down, repeat dropping it, power up and then it is fine, often for several months.

I can’t believe it but dropping it a few inches actually worked for me!!

Thank you for your unconventional solution!

i had given up on this problem and wasted lots of paper and ink and tried every recommendation. Then I came across this blog. I thought it was somebody trying to get me wreck my 5530 so I would have to buy a new one! So with great trepidation I followed this seemingly crazy solution.

GUSS WHAT. ............  IT WORKED!!

Many Thanks!
