Restart Devices: Sometimes, simply restarting both your printer and your computer can resolve temporary glitches that may be preventing the scanner from working.

Reinstall or Update Drivers: Outdated or corrupted printer drivers can cause the scanner not to work. Visit the HP website to download the latest drivers for your HP Deskjet F4180. Make sure to choose the drivers that correspond with your computer's operating system.

HP Scan Software: Check if the HP scanning software is installed on your computer. If not, you can download it from the HP website. This software often provides more functionality than the basic drivers.

Check for Errors: Look on the printer display for any error messages. If there are error codes, you can look them up in the printer's manual or on the HP website to find specific solutions.

Rachel,I am. so grateful for. your help. The computer and printer were properly connected, and I started them again,

but when it came to finding the right drive routine, I couldn't manaage. 

Can you possibly help me?  The printer is old and my mac is up to date. Sonoma 14.1 but the printer has been a gem all these years.

1. Click on this link -  https://support.hp.com/us-en

2. Select the country.

3. Enter the serial number of your device.

4. Select the country from the drop-down.

5. Click on "Show Options".

6. Fill out the web form. A case number and phone number will now populate for you.

Unfortunately, it wasn't possible. The OS driver routines that my printer and Sonoma operating system don't match. My printer is very old.  Thanks for your help.
