I have a HP Envy computer that came with Windows 8 which I upgrated to Windows 10. Everything was working great for a month and then I got the WDF Violation. I went to HP support and there was a repair download which I tried to no avail. Then it said about a program were you go into the Registry to change something. I felt at this point that it was time for someone professional to look at it. The outcome was that they said that Microsoft has a 30 day driver that is suppose to be replaced with one from HP and that there is a letter somewhere that HP is not going to issue a drive for this problem. My computer was less then 3 years old. I then went out and got a Dell computer. If this is the way that Hp treats its customers its time to stop buying HP

I had a similar problem where my HP Envy Phoenix came with Windows 8.1 and worked fine. I did the online update to Windows 10 mostly because I was unable to get my Microsoft Flight Simulatot X to work on 8.1.

Windows 10 seemed ok (FSX) worked and I updated 10 and it still seemed ok. I then updated my Office Suite and that is when I received the Windows error message then the black screen of death.  Fortunately my computer wa still under warranty so I sent it back to HP. They determined, supposedly, my BIOS was corrupted so they restored the computer to its factory settings and shipped it back to me. I lost everything and spent the next two days reloading programs. I did not install the new Office but validated the package that came with the factory settings.

my Phoenix is now running on 8.1 and actually seems to be better than when I first got it. I have not tried to reload the flight simulator X. who woulda thought Microsoft would not even support its own products.........

The consumer is truly screwed these days because customer service is pretty much non existent from HP or Microsoft.

Hi,

I appear to be having the same black screen problem that everyone else is having but it didn't start after I upgraded to windows 10.  In fact, I've been using windows 10 for a couple of months.  Two days ago, I started seeing messages about an imminent drive failure.  Yesterday I went out and purchased a new drive of equal size (2TB).  I then removed the drive from my envy 23 and put it in an enclosure.  I did the same for the new drive and then I cloned the envy 23 drive to the new drive using Macrium Reflect on a different computer.  I put the new drive in the envy 23 and when I booted it up I got the WDF_Violation message.  It kept cycling through the boot / repair process until I held down the power switch.  After that, I couldn't get anything but a black screen when I powered it on.  I put the old drive back in but I'm in the same boat with the black screen.

I noticed that the HDD light did not come on so I did some tests and pulled the HDD and memmory to see if I would get a beep code.  I did not.  I figured that this meant that the motherboard was toast.  I changed the CMOS battery and used the jumpers  (beside the RAM) to reset the CMOS.  After that I could see the HDD LED blink as I turn the machine on.  I was also now able to get a beep code when I removed the RAM but not when I removed the HDD.  It seems like replacing the mother board would probably fix this but I think it's overkill.  The motherboard isn't dead - if it was I wouldn't get the beepcode when there was no memory.

Can someone from HP escalate this and maybe let us know what is going on?  I'd be happy to help test this if anyone from HP would like to contact me.

On another note, if I want to get a new 23" touch screen, is there a version that is VESA mountable?  I currently have my envy 23 on my kitchen wall (and the family loves it) but it seems that the new models can't be wall-mounted.

I am having the exact same symptoms and series of events.  I have a HP ENVY Phoenix 810-170st CTO Desktop PC.  We had a brief power outage Saturday, and when PC first started, it was going through applying updates, then the dreaded loops of Blue-Screen WDF_VIOLATION, restoring windows message, etc.  Then finally I get the black screen and the high-speed fan.  I occasionally got high speed fans on updates, but usually just waiting a bit fixed that.  I'll try unplugging the power cord for a while, but it would be nice if there was a CMOS reset jumper on the motherboard to set/remove.

Update:

Found the motherboard details at http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03132964 for my model.  The CMOS jumper reset did not help.  Going to try taking out the battery next.

Update 2:

Taking out the battery and replacing it with a fresh one (and doing  the CMOS again) did not help either.

I have a download from HP that says that any HP computer that was purchased prior to August 2013 that they will not develope a driver for it for Windows 10. My HP computer was less then 3 years old and it is now a non-functioning useless paper weight. So much for HP supporting their customers. I went out and bought a Dell computer. I have no intention of ever buying another HP product.

I was able to fix my HP Envy 20, although I had to restore to Facory Settings. It's better than having a brick.  I now know it may be possible to restore it. I don't have a specifix fix, but maybe someone else can use the info that I do have. It seems as though the PC is actually running, just without a monitor. Basically what I did was act as though I was blind while running through the normal repair or restore procedure. So, during startup I just started pressing buttons until I regained video. So, whatever the process is to get to the menu for Safe Mode, Restore, etc. , use that like the pc is running as normal. If any more detail/explanation is needed, please let me know.

I had the same problem, I took it to a "professional' he said it was the MOBO, my mistake was not to check it with 8 or 8.1, I reinstalled 8 then 8.1 and went to 10, and test it again, WDF_VIOLATION still, thats when I got it serviced for nothing, got it back installed 8 thorugh UEFI and tested everything, then added all my hardware, 2nd HDD, GPU, 2nd CD/DVD-ROM, and tested again, and everything was good, updated to 8.1, tested everything again and still running like new, I am not going to install 10 and break my head again for nothing, has to be something with the compatiblity of HP and Microsoft. Sorry for those who bought their machines with W10 preloaded, no much you guys can do, but wait. Hope this helps at least 1 person 🙂 good luck.

Hey guys i found out it is a softwear issue. That windows 10 update caused the issue. The update is not canpatible with the computer. Heres a tip take out the flash drive for the keyboard and take out the memory chip and change the posision of it intill it turns on. Then make sure u have flash drive so u can take out ur information then try factory resting the computer to windows 8.1 if u get that wdf voiltion try doing something do bot shut down ur computer it will be hard to turn back on. This is hp's fault we shouldent pay for a mistake that hp did. Let compain to hp we should fight for the mistake that hp did. Plz email me at oreojon8904@gmail.com if u want to fight with me.
