Yeah please do that I'm also moving away from HP 🙂 I'll be building my own PC.

This forum was no help and given that it was an issue with an update and not the computer it self I filed a complaint with BBB and HP responed.  The paid to have my computer shipped to a service center for repair.  But after it being there for 2 weeks HP replaced my computer with a new one saying they couldn't fix the old one.  Which I figured that it would be hard to fix since it was over 3 years old.  But I got my new one and it is still having problems, even upgraded the RAM to 16 GB's!  I think it's all a problem with Win 10, not liking it.  Since they are not going to release a new version of Windows ever, I imagine they are just going to keep rolling out updates.  Hope they get it right someday.

I tried almost everything when my HP Envy desktop died.  I had exactly the same experience as you and actually it seemed to happen after an automatic Windows 10 update.  I even ended up contacting some kind of customer suppport at Microsoft but they just screwed me around for about 2 hours on the phone and never accomplished anything then told me they had to refer it to another department that handled that typew of problem.....that is when they apparently accidentally disconnected me and although they had my phone number never called me back until about three weeks later (after I got the computer back from HP).

Fortunately, I had one week left on my warranty so I shipped it back to HP.  They said they had to reinstall the BIOS which basically reset my computer to the original factory setting condition with Windows 8.  This meant I lost all my programs and data so I ended up spending two days, after I got my computer back, restoring the computer to its pre-disaster condition.  I will not use Windows 10....PERIOD!

I do not know what else HP might have done because the included customer service report was extremely vague.

Sorry if this is bad news for you but it appears the only way to fix the problem is to send it back to the manufacturer or to a computer tech who has the same capability as HP.

I've had mine over 3 years. So yeah out of warranty.
No money to repai. And being a gamer be awhile before I can replace it with what I need. I was about to up grade my video card and ram in this one and hope to extend it's usefulness for another couple years, But!
Any one need an anchor?

Since I posted some 6 weeks ago I have another PC with the same problem.  To be fair it wasn't HP, but the mobo manufacturer was the same Foxconn.  Upgraded PC from Win 7 to 10, and happened after a Win 10 update apparently.

As we all know when Win 10 boots it checks the slip in the BIOS to validate that Windows is Genuine.  My guess is that this is where something has gone wrong, which so far appears too be happening to Foxconn boards/BIOS.

I also note that Microsoft is working hard to eliminate pirated Windows Software, and folks recently are being caught out with "WIndows not Genuine" messages on WIndows 7, happening with Win 7 disks bought via Amazon.

So maybe all this hassle is down to Microsofts ongoing project to tighten up on non-genuine Windows installations, which in error is causing issues to Win 10 HP/Foxconn systems.  Very hard to get Microsoft to accept liability for this issue.

After my All-in-One desktop crashed this past January, I replaced it with a HP laptop.  From the beginning, I had problems with the laptop.  Within one week of purchase, I had to return the laptop to the place of purchase.  They had it for about a week.  After I got it back, I used it for a few weeks, and it stopped working correctly, AGAIN!  I took it back in.  This happened a third time.  I decided to buy a Mac, and I have not had any trouble with the Mac, and Apple Care and their customer support is fantastic!  I should have switched to Mac four years ago.  (I went through three PCs - one Dell and two HPs - in a four year period.  Three of my sisters have Mac computers, and they have never had the kinds of problems I have had with the HP and Dell computers, and one sister used the same computer for eight years!)  I am still learning how to use this Mac, but I know I can get help when I need it.

I have successfully booted up an HP W10 notebook that shutdown with the WDF-Violation today!

I purchased an HP 15-ac111tx Notebook earlier this year & it is shipped with W10 & no issues until today - the WDF_Violation screen showed up after booting up following 4 days off. As there was a lot of HDD activity I left it to download updates etc for 30mins then proceeded to do some printing includung scans to pdf (Adobe viewer) - OK for a short time then the WDF_Violation & shutdown.

Pressing the Power button lit up the Power LED but no image or flicker, only a black screen; HP Monitor, external HDD, Ethernet LAN (printer etc) & keyboard / mouse dongle were attached. The Power button did shut it down.

After a while searching forums I decided to do a power off by removing the battery for 30sec. Power up then good with a successful boot to the options screen holding down the power then ESC key after that, so I chose to quit that & it booted up normally (with all peripherals removed first except for the dongle). There was a notification to reboot to install updates so that was done. The boot up resulted in updates then normal boot to the log in screen.

Connected initially: HP monitor, external USB HDD, Ethernet LAN (printer etc), Mouse / Keyboard dongle.

Windows Updates that were then installed after a reboot:

KB 31881128 Adobe flash

KB 890830 Windows Malicious .. tool

KB 3189866 Cumulative Update W10 V 1607 for x64 (dated September 13).

Synaptics - Pointing Drawing - Synaptics SMBus TouchPad

This was a pre-installed W10 notebook, no previous issues with any updates. Suggests a conflict with one of the updates above that was installed without a reboot required, or conflict with a video driver because the external monitor was also connected & on display, yet it did not happen until after around 15 minutes of use? There are a lot of components to the Cumulative update:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3189866

None of the 9 updates packaged in it show up in the previously "Installed Updates" listed (search for it).
