Is the Envy 750-140z compatible with AMD's RX 480? I'm assuming I would need to also upgrade the PSU?

Hi there @NicholasBraden,

Welcome back to the HP Support Forums!  I understand that you are looking for some guidance with a graphics card upgrade. I am happy to give you a hand with this.

Using the following sources:

HP ENVY 750-140z CTO Desktop PC product specifications and configurable options

HP and Compaq Desktop PCs - motherboard specifications, Orchid3

Radeon™ RX 480 Graphics Card - amd.com

Your system has a PCI Express x16 (Gen 3.0) slot, and a 300 W power supply.

The AMD RX 480 specifications do not have some of the details I normally look for like minimum power supply requirement. Instead it shows typical board power of 150W, which is not a peak power listing.  It also does not indicate what number and type of supplementary power connectors are required, or the generation of PCIe slot required.  However your motherboard has gen 3.0 as I already mentioned so that is not likely to be an issue.

So with a typical power consumption of 150 W for the card, and to be safe assuming that your system is using close to the 300 W provided by the existing power supply you are looking at 450 W minimum for typical usage.  I would suggest going much higher than that, probably more like 550 - 600 W for a hard drive replacement, but you would want to know what supplementary power connections are required and make sure that the power supply you get has those available both in type and number.

There is never any guarantee that any part added to a system will be compatible, and as it stands your system is incompatible if only over the power issue.

Please let me know whether that helps, and if it does resolve your issue, please mark this post as a solution. Kudos would also be appreciated.
