If black is not printing on one of the following printer models, please follow the standard troubleshooting steps outlined in the links below (such as checking ink levels, checking cartridges are vented & seated properly, run a Printhead Clean, verify you have the latest Firmware etc.)

If these steps do not resolve the issue, please contact HP phone support (even if the printer is out of warranty), as you may require a replacement.

Ciara....do you really think I havent tried all these things...several times.  Of course I have. Nothing worked. Found out it was cheaper to just buy a new printer...so I got an epson. Same features...ink is cheaper. Will see how this one works.

Please read this post then provide some details.  What printer model? What country are you located in?

I tried to contact HP via phone but the web site says call or chat during regular hours.  As this is 05:02 PM and the site says til 06:00 pm, I would think I'd be good.  HP is really working to get me to switch to Epson or Cannon.  Anyone have any sugestions?  I have exausted every trouble shooting tip and procedure mentioned for this printer short of using a hammer.

Thank you for your reply.  I had seen and followed all of the steps in the link you provided up to contacting HP support as my printer is out of warranty.  i am hoping that someone will let me know how to remove the printhead assemply so that I can clean it and try that next.

I would suggest you Contact HP, even if your printer is out of warranty they may resolve your issue.  If you contact HP and do not get a satisfactory resolution please post back here.

The printhead in these printers is not user replaceable.  If you do manage to remove (and damage) the printhead HP will not be able to help you.

I have the same problem. 4620 is out of warranty by a few months. Black ink suddenly stopped working. I have followed the troubleshooting. Cleaned the cartridges several times. Even opened up another XL black cartridge. Nothing. I called support in Costa Rica, and I was told that the print tray is a consumible and that I would have to replace it. Oh but sorry, there are no authorized service centers in Costa Rica. Really? This print tray that I cannot take out and clean myself is expected to stop working after 15 months of very light use? Is that how HP does business?

So now I am stuck with a piece of you know what printer and over 100 Euros worth of cartridges that I purchased in Spain before I moved to Costa Rica because the stupid cartridges are regionalized. There is no way I am buying HP again. A loyal customer of 20 years is now going to change brands. Thanks HP.

Don't treat us like idiots please. That link literally suggests that black might not be printing because you're out of black.

This is a brand-new black cartridge. The vent is clear. I have used over half my £50-worth of colour cartridges in running printhead cleans. i have run every kind of setting reset.

HP 3520e was printing fine thirty seconds before I replaced the black and then nothing.

Nowhere in the literally thousands of posts on this subject does an HP employee offer anything useful.

Please, please tell me I can fix this without buying a new printer and throwing away four three-day-old XL ink cartridges.

I totally agree. After replacing cartrige it no longer worked. After no hp response I went out and bought an Epson WorkForce printer and it has been great. HP is now lost me as a customer.
