I bought a kit so that I could add a second hard drive to my computer. When I plug the cable into the motherboard, the computer will not power on. I bought two cables, each from a seperate source. I have tried both cables. When I plug in the original SATA cable(primary) and the secondary SATA cable to the motherboard, nothing. No power. I even tried it after removing the hard drives and just the cables were installed. There was no power to the motherboard still.
I admit that I do not know if each model requires its own type, brand, or whatever of SATA cable.
Any ideas?
Thank you

Hey@computersuck,
Thanks for the response.
I appreciate the steps performed in isolating the steps.
Then you will have to buy a pair of them from a store locally and try them out.
Hope this helps. Feel free to reply for more.

Hello@computersuck,
Thanks for using the HP Forums. One Stop for all sort of solutions for your HP Products.
I have read your post and understand that you need assistance in fixing the issue related to the second hard drive which when connected, will not allow the PC to power on. Is that, right? I will be glad to help you.
This is a clear indication of a hardware failure which is shorted out internally and when connected, is not passing the POST check on the PC.
The only solution is to check with other hard drive and check if that works.
That way, it will help us to know if it’s an issue with the SATA connectors on the motherboard or the hard drive.

Thank you for your quick response.
I have taken both SATA cables off and used just the longer one (secondary SATA cable) It will not power on when I attach that cable.
As I said I bought 2 cables, from seperate sources. Neither cable will allow the computer to power on. Is there a specific model number cable that I require?
When I take off the secondary cable and plug in the primary cable it works fine.
I tried both slots and there is not a problem with either slot.
I have narrowed it down to the cables being bad or incorrect. It seems odd that they would both be bad.
