HP Notebook - 15-g227wm
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

First off, I'm not sure if the version of Windows being run was 32 bit or 64 bit.

The laptop in question is my mother's, and randomly began becoming unresponsive in the middle of the night.  She had not dropped it, and only uses the laptop to browse the internet and play Facebook games.

I went into the startup menu and asked the laptop to run a systems diagnostic.  Within two minutes, it told me that the Harddrive Short DST check had failed, giving the code 9SNJ3G-7MP84W-XD7WL1-60T703.

As this is a harddrive issue, I expect that, at the very least, we'll have to replace the harddrive, if not buy another laptop.

The problem is this; the laptop was bought from a Wal-Mart.  It was the display model they had out, as it was the last one in stock, and Wal-Mart was unable to locate the box for the laptop at the time of purchase.  We have no user manual, and no CDs to reinstall Windows (the laptop had 8.1 at the time of purchase, and we took advantage of the free upgrade to 10 when it was available).

Please let us know our best options.  Thank you for your time.

Hi:

While I cannot tell you specifically what that code means, yes the bottom line is the hard drive has suffered a casualty and needs to be replaced.

The PC originally came with W8.1 64 bit.  HP does not support that model for 32 bit operating systems.

Here is the service manual for that model.

Removing and replacing the hard drive in that model is a daunting task, but if you are up to it, see chapter 6 for the R & R procedures.

If the notebook is still under warranty, you can get HP to replace the drive under warranty.

If not, you are on your own.

You can order W8.1 recovery media for the notebook from the link below, or clean reinstall windows 10 64 bit on the new hard drive from the link below this one (Media Creation Tool).  You can clean install W10 free of charge, without a product key, since the notebook was previously legally upgraded to W10.
