Hi,
I woud like to upgrade the processor on my HP Pavilion 17-e020us notebook. It currently has an Intel Core i3-3110m dual-core processor running at 2.40 GHz. I realize that upgrading the processor in my model also means I need a new motherboard and heatsink, and I am willing to replace those parts too.
I am looking for a quad-core processor that can run over 3 GHz (it's OK if the base frequency is under, as long is it can Turbo / be overclocked above 3 GHz).
If this helps, I know the TDP of the notebook's current processor is 35 W; when I am upgrading, I am looking to get more performance (I don't care if it lowers battery life and uses more power). The notebook currently doesn't have a battery (the one it came with died), and this is the one it used: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Genuine-47WH-HP-Pavilion-PI06-14-E000-15-E000-710416-001-HSTNN-UB4N-Battery... . The reason I mention this is that some newer mobile processors, such as this one: http://ark.intel.com/products/88972/Intel-Core-i7-6920HQ-Processor-8M-Cache-up-to-3_80-GHz, use more power but have better performance. Can I get a processor like that one, that uses more power but is more powerful (Would that one work?)? If so, what other parts would I have to replace?
If you need to know anything else about the notebook's specs, you can find it here: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03782483.
So, which is the best processor that I can upgrade to that fits my needs (see the second paragraph), regardless of cost? What other components would I have to buy? Links to what I would need would be great!
Thank you very much to all who answer.

Hi,
There is a list of CPU's supported for the series on page #2 of the Maintenance and Service Guide on the following link:
http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-Pavilion-17-Notebook-PC-series/5375409/model/5395210/manuals
Please don't ask mw why but you have to go to page 85 to get the right part number for selected CPU and order from HP. The document also shows you how to replace the CPU.
And if you ask my why, my answer: In many cases, we need right HP part number, buyning elsewhere the chance to get it to work is 50/50.
Regards.

Hi,
The processor is soldered, you can not change.

Sometimes when we use brackets with other character(s) such as : this will automatically be converted to other symbol that why I always leave a space between bracket and other character when posting to any forum.
Hope this explains why.

So that's why ... Thanks!
On the topic of the processor, the one that meets my needs that I want is unavailable to order from the HP PartStore website (http://partsurfer.hp.com/Search.aspx?searchText=701658-001). Do you know of any other places where I can get the processor and the other components I need?
Also, I'm wondering if there's an upgrade from the integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 that I can get from this model. Do you know if I can install a laptop graphics card; if so, which (If possible, if it isn't the integrated Intel graphics, I like / would get NVIDIA).
Thanks again!

In this case as @terminator said, the processor is soldered to the motherboard so any suggestion that you can replace just the processor is incorrect. You would need to replace the whole motherboard. There are three full pages of motherboards. You can replace yours with any of them but if you get one with a processor socket like this one:
For use only on computer models equipped with the Intel HM86 Express chipset, a graphics subsystem with 1 GB of discrete memory, and the Windows 8.1 Standard operating system 749985-501
The above has a discrete video card. There is no other way to change out the video card. There is no video card. The video chip is soldered to the motherboard as in the case of 99% of laptops. If you get that board you also need a heatsink and a processor.
You already gave the solution but there is much more to know.

Read my edited post above. With all due respect, this is a common inquiry but most people just have no idea of all that is involved and is a project almost nobody follows through to the end. The expense and effort is just overwhelming compared to the smart soilution of selling your laptop and buying something that really meets your needs.
