Hi Dave and all others,

Most of this post is from my last night’s post that got dropped during the posting.

Their is a little more action here in the last 24 hours.:smileyhappy:

Dave thanks for your Private Message and your kind offer. At this stage I feel that pursuing the option you suggested could cause more trouble than is necessary, but I will keep it in mind and have sent you a reply with the info you requested.

Have HP responded to you after submitting the *.log file?

Dave I strongly suggest that you do not wipe the one clean version of the OS that you have as you have no additional software on that drive and only the "HP-OS" version running (W7ProSP1(64bit) (and the HP_TOOLS partition)). This is ideal to use for testing if you are happy to do that.

First I set HPSF=manual as mentioned at:

http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-Systems-and/HP-Software-framework-and-HP-connection-...

Now I have HPSF=disabled as otherwise I get a flood (2-3xper sec.) of AdminEvent Warnings=(CaslSmBios) and with HPSF=disabled only 2 at boot up for HPPA. I have Error and Warning Events logged all over (Admin, WinLogApps. WinLogSys, HPPA, HPPT and HPSF).

I am still not sure that the HPSF installation causes the problem as I started picking up problems after the installation of HP_SoftPaq which I I used to install HPSF and that compounded the issue.

E-Tham at:

http://h30499.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-HP-ProBook-Compaq-Slate/Query-for-HP-Expert-s-Day-18-Apr-2012-...

also mentions an issue with HP_SoftPaq.

DavidMarshal's link is very interesting which dax1792 also mentions in the h30499... thread.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?cc=uk&lc=en&dlc=en&softwareitem=ob-104992-1

(By the way thanks to Sec_Ex for the corresponding ftp site link).

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp56501-57000/sp56878.html

As the 1st mentioned link above is to a UK site I wanted to check what the US HPBus. Support Center, which I use often, listed as the latest HPSF for my HP ProBook 4520s and found sp50261.exe (3.7 MB) ver. 4.0.59.1 (1 Sep 2010) recommended at: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=32...

and no mention of sp56878.exe [1/1, 6.29M] ver. 4.5.10.1 (2012-05-09) on that site at all. The US site list many versions of HPSF but shows clearly which hardware the individual HPSF is suitable for (Release Notes Tab). Information that I could not find on the UK site where sp56878.exe is. Last night I had suggested Dave Test that version but now this will probably not be necessary as Dink at: http://h30499.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-HP-ProBook-Compaq-Slate/Query-for-HP-Expert-s-Day-18-Apr-2012-...

already tried this in the mean time with negative results on his 8740w.

Dink your mod suggestion and the batch file to empty the log once in a while, at h30499…., is not acceptable for a company like HP.

HP needs to escalate this issue and get a team together to replicate the problem and resolve it once and for all, starting with BIOS through HP_SoftPaq to HPSF. Alternately they tell us honestly that they know about the problem and not hide and patronise us with lame suggestions and fixes that do not work. Have they even bothered to replicate the problem and see if the fix works? HP is most certainly not in a position to look the other way on this issue considering the negative publicity they are getting in the media these days relating to outdated technology, not being able to keep up with the times, having to lie of 27000 members of staff etc.

No matter how big HP is please remember that the higher you clime the harder you fall.

At the end of the day we the users are your customers and therefore entitled to demand you attend to our problems.

Regards

Sami

So you have the same issues in your BiosUpdate.log , interesting , let me point you back to an earlier thread where I said that some users found that BIOS flashing via Windows caused Video Bios to NOT flash, although BIOS flashed and reported no errors , IT HAD to be done from a USB key !!

Did you flash via Windows ??

SMBIOS Init Failure and Failed Loading HP Battery Control 2010 Protocol  , are BOTH in my SystemDiag.log on my HP_TOOLS aswell , after doing a full system check via F2, although it says PASS on everything ? I have mentioned both of these log's AND sent the log's to HP Tech but they seem to not see any relevance in these and my issue ?

@ Renamo

Yes , I am Dink on the other forum , I did try to be Dink on both forums but this forum already had a Dink so I had to add a 4 🙂 Got your emails OK, Goodluck on your mission. In answer to your query, I have ACRONIS Images of BOTH my drives and all 3 running systems ( Total of 5 Images ) , so I can trash them and return exactly to before I started , so I can test ANYTHING 🙂 to find a fix. I don't have HP_SoftPaq loaded as I prefer to do updates manually so I have the SPxxxx.exe for future use. But if I remove HPPA my problems appear only when I access BATTERY bitz, or use HPSA. HPSF seems happy as long as it just sits there doing nothing 🙂

I will try to keep my replies to this forum as it is easier for all to follow , the only reason I replied on the other was that HPsec replied saying there was a fix available and I should try it ,when he was replying to me , obviously NOT having read this thread , even though I specifically posted a link to this thread on my question. That is why I then posted a link to that forum thread here. I think I was a bit sharp to him , but it did make me see red when he posted the reply within an hour of my Q , and had not been here.

Sorry HPsec , I know you were trying to help but this issue is now starting to take over my life, I've spent more time chasing these problems with my NEW PC than I have enjoying it. So far I have had a new M/B because it kept locking up and had these Casl errors , now the lockups are gone BUT I still have these errors and I have the occasional BSOD , relating to 8086:d138 , But that is another story ( I do know how to fix this ,Thank God, it is to do with the Nvidia driver and Intel Chipset driver  ), BUT guess what , HP deny ANY knowledge of this issue aswell, and have not updated any chipset drivers even though they are available on the Intel site ! It is ALL over google if you search WHEA Event 17 Errors or 8086 d138, it is even documented in depth here how to fix this:

http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-business-class-notebooks/585523-potential-fix-nvidia-owners-stop-...

The Nvidia forum also note the issue but does not really show a fix. So why is HP not following up when we have these problems , it's a very poor show when this Laptop costs over 2000 pounds and HP is not updating it's driver pages , but leaving it to it's customers and these forums to find the fixes .Thank god I bought a Business machine and have 3yr warranty , I feel sorry for the normal consumer buyers that only get 1 yr.

I feel better now I've had a little rant , sorry all , but needed to get it off my chest .

Well today had a phone call , HP have moved this to Tech 2 support and promise that the issue will be resolved.

Unfortunately their previous track record makes me very sceptical.

Dave.

@Dink4

Yes, it was flashed through Windows - it was done with Support Assistant according to its history.

 @ DavidMarshall

That is VERY good to know, when HP Tech 2 respond to me I will ask them more about these specific errors and see if they can spread more light on them.

I am not sure /am not prepared to REFLASH my BIOS , UNLESS HP tech says it is cool to reapply the same F21 BIOS over the top of this one, as this can turn your PC into an expensive doorstop. However if they say it's OK I will flash from a USB key to see if this changes the log output.

Luckily I have warranty ,but for those that don't I see on EBAY that a German Company is selling BIOS chips preflashed to your specific machine for 20 pounds. But you do have to be competent with a soldering iron to fit them. However if I was going this route I think I would fit a DIP socket and put the chip in it , so any later chip changes would only take a few minutes and no soldering.More like your normal Desktop setup.

@ MrPhilipTran

I see you have been waiting since Feb 2011 , for some sort of resolution to this , did you ever contact support about this ?

I see my support case has been updated online today , Tech 2 have now picked up the ball and are running with it, the update says that they are working on this issue in their Labs and a fix will be found.:smileyvery-happy:

Maybe HP have finally decided to look at this and try and fix it ?

I hope so , my gut feeling after reading back thro the whole thread today ,suggests to me that this problem can be caused by a few different issues, some have a BIOS problem and some have an OS prob ( dll's or old Registry links messing with the install of HPSF )  even though we get the same erors.

Mine I think is BIOS due to the errors I can find and the link between the 2 error  logs I have on BATTERY CONTROL and SMBIOS , and HPPA not being able to CALIBRATE. It can't be hardware as this was identical on my previous M/Board, unless it is a battery fault ? as these also have a small circuit board in them aswell , may try the battery off my 8730w and see, if I get nothing back soon.

Would love to know what this Folio state error means , that we all seem to get aswell ?

This is all I could find ( from Adobe Site )

Folio States

Constants that describe the library state of a folio that an API function is attempting to operate on.

I've contacted HP since the problem started, all they said is to ignore it, cause at that time I was the only one with that error, so they did nothing. Now we got a lot of people getting this error so they decided to fix it.

Well Sir , all I can say is that you are a very patient man , and credit to you .

I would have gone wild if they had suggested that to me and demanded a replacement or refund.

For the money that they charge for these units , and the massive profit they make on them they should be PERFECT.

Thankfully I have a fault , as my battery will not calibrate properly aswell, HPPA works OK but keeps saying " Data collection in progress " , so it's not just error codes for me.

So for me it's fix or money back/ replace with one that works, please HP:smileyvery-happy:
