HP Officejet Pro 8600 Premium
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Product name is HP Officejet Pro 8600 Premium.  I have updated drivers on the PC  and tried the printer but it said it was up to date.  I have rebooted the computer, the printer, and the router.  I reset the network and printer using these instructions:

Settings->Devices->Printers & Scanners->HP Officejet Pro 8600 (Network)->Manage->Printer Properties->Ports

The Printer was connected to a port with a name that was the same as the serial number

I selected add port->standard tcp/ip port->then new port, which started the "welcome to the add Standard TCP/IP Printer Port Wizard

I clicked next and input the ip address of the printer (from the printer status report I printed out previously) and completed the wizard.

 It didn't help.

I have 4 machines running to this printer, wirelessly, and they all act the same.  Sometime about a year ago the response went from immediate to 15 seconds + or -.  I have no idea what triggered the change at that time and I have been trying different things ever since to no avail.

Hi @JimWhiz.

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you with the  "slow printing" issue.

Does this happen even you try a make a copy?

meanwhile, try the steps below-

step 1-Try a power reset on the printer

Resetting the printer can resolve some types of slow printing issues.

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.

  2. Unplug the power cord from the power source.

  3. Wait 60 seconds.

  4. Reconnect the power cord to a wall outlet and to the printer.

    NOTE:

HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.

Try to print. If the issue persists, continue to the next step.

Step 2: Check the printer preferences

Selecting certain paper types or printing in Best quality can slow print speeds. Print with plain paper in Normal or Draft quality for faster print speeds.

  1. Search Windows for printers, and then click Printers & scanners in the list of results.

  2. Click your printer, and then click Manage.

  3. Click Printing Preferences.

  4. Click the Paper or Paper/Quality tab.

  5. In the Type or Paper Type field, make sure Plain Paper is selected.

  6. Adjust the print quality.

    • HP Inkjet and LaserJet printers:

In the Print Quality field, make sure Draft or Normal is selected.

    • HP Laser printers:

Click the Graphics tab, and then click Standard in the Quality field.

  7. Click OK or Apply to confirm the changes.

  8. Try to print. If the issue persists, continue to the next step.

 step 3-Check the network status

If your printer is connected to a wired or wireless network, there are several tips that might resolve slow printing issues.

  • On your computer, check the wireless signal strength by clicking the wireless connection icon in the Windows task bar. If the signal strength is low, move the router, computer, and printer closer together.

  • Make sure there are no additional strains on your network, such as downloading or streaming services. Depending on your bandwidth, these activities can significantly affect print speed.

  • If the printer is connected to the network with an Ethernet cable, make sure the cable connections are secure.

  • Restart your router by unplugging it, waiting 10 seconds, and plugging it back in.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Regarding my printing delay on my HP Officejet 8600 pro, I tried your suggestions.

  1. The power reset didn't change anything.
  2. Regarding your second step, the printer was already set to normal so there was nothing to do there.
  3. I also tried checking the network status.
    1. Signal strength was good on the computers and the printer,
    2. There were no other strains/activity on my network while I was testing,
    3. I'm not connected via ethernet cables.
    4. And I restarted the router as you suggested, with no improvement.

I did find another suggestion on the internet.  It said to change the port to TCP/IP which I tried.  One of my computers no has immediate response to the printer, and the other computer I was testing went down to a 4 second response.  I tried all of the suggestions you made after I had the 4 second response working and nothing helped.

I appreciate your help.  I think I am okay for now.  I can live with 4 seconds, although I have no idea why they are different.  (I haven't tried my third or fourth machines yet because they are physically located some distance from the printer and I can not judge the response time from there.)

Have a great day and stay healthy!

@JimWhiz,

Thank you for replying.

Use HP Print and Scan Doctor to resolve the slow printing issue

  1. Download HP Print and Scan Doctor.

  2. Run HPPSdr.exe from the download location on your computer.

  3. Once HP Print and Scan Doctor opens, click Start, and then select your printer.

    • If your printer in not in the list, turn it off and on, and then click Retry.

    • If there is a connection problem, follow the instructions in HP Print and Scan Doctor.

  4. If a screen prompts you to turn on printer updates, click Yes.

  5. If a screen prompts you to make your printer the default printer, click Yes.

Then try printing.

Let me know if this helps!
