HP ENVY 5540
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have an HP ENVY 5540 printer/scanner/copier (wireless) in conjunction with my HP Pavillion p6-2007c computer upgraded  from Windows 7 to Windows 10. I recently lost power (from IRMA) and have reset the computer to the factory settings upon restoraton of power. My printer will not print any document and when I check the status, it says printer is offline. I have performed the following to try to correct this:  Reinstalled the printer 1) using the CD that came with the printer and 2) from the internet (as recommended by the print doctor). I also used the wireless wizard from the printer several times. I also downloaded the "full driver software" as per the print doctor. Each time I tried these, the printer remained offline even though the printer itself said connected. What's going on??

Thanks for engaging in the HP Forums! I see by your post that you are experiencing printer offline issues. I will certainly do my best to help you!

 

Let’s start by assigning a static IP address to the printer. Here are the steps:
 

  • Obtain the IP address of the printer – You can touch the “wireless” icon on the printer control panel to get the IP address.
  • Type the IP address on your web browser to obtain the printer EWS page on your computer.
  • Go to "Network" tab - General - Select "Network protocols" - Select "Enable IPv4 only" (or similar) - Apply the settings.
  • Go to the “Network” tab – Click on “Wireless (802.11) – Then click on “Network address (IPv4)
  • Click on the radio button which says, “Manual IP” and then click “Suggest a manual IP address” to give a manual IP address to your printer.
  • Click on radio button which says, “Manual DNS Server” and under manual preferred type 8.8.8.8 and under manual alternate type 8.8.4.4 (This is Google DNS server address)
  • Restart the printer and then router once done.


Once done, perform a clean install on the printer as suggested below:
 

  • First, unplug the USB cable from the printer if present.
  • Go to Control Panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Envy printer entries and uninstall them.
  • Now go to Control Panel – Devices and Printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
  • Press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" (There is a space between .exe & /) and press enter.
  • Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
  • Again, go to the Run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Now, click http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/COL61237/mp-147823-1/EN5540_Basicx64_1119.exe to download and install the software.

Hi Dvortex and Riddle_Decipher: I started to use your (Dvortex) procedure using the IP address that I found for my ENVY earlier and I got a message saying page could not be found.  I restarted the computer and the printer and checked for the IP address. The one currently showed was slightly different than the one I observed earlier. So, before going through the afforementioned procedure, I cheched the printer status and it showed OK. I don't know what caused this change but I can now print with the ENVY wirelessly. I am holding on to your recommended procedure in case the same thing happens in the future. Again thank you and your staff for the assistance. KUDOS to you all.

Hello - your solution worked for me - thank you very much. I was out of options after removing and reloading software, printer, etc. so this saved the day. One comment - don't take as negative - might want to give a little more detail on what drivers to remove - I think I tried to remove some that were not related to the printer out of my own ignorance. Thanks again.
