The ADF on our printer is jammed. Every time I go to use it to scan a sheet of paper, it takes it about 1/4 of the way, starts screeching something awful, and gives me the jammed error. I opened the cover, threw back the teal piece to open the rollers, and was able to recover a shred of paper inside. Somone used the ADF to scan/copy a receipt, which is small and very thin, and the machine jammed and shredded the paper. I'm 99% sure there's more bits of the receipt inside causing the issue, but I can't get inside the assembly to locate and remove it.

Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂 I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers.

Let's try to reset the Printer here as it helps in removing any stored static electricity from the Printer which might be causing these issues.

  1. Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
  2. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
  3. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  4. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  5. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  6. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  7. NOTE: HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
  8. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  9. Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  10. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

If the issue still persists, clean the paper feed rollers in the ADF area.

  1. Lift the top cover of the ADF. This provides easy access to the rollers and separator pad.

    1. ADF cover

    2. Rollers

    3. Separator pad

  2. Lightly dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with distilled water, and then squeeze any excess liquid from the cloth.

  3. Press the cloth against the rollers, and then rotate them upward with your fingers. Apply a moderate amount of pressure to remove any dust or dirt buildup.

    1. Rollers

    2. Separator pad

  4. Allow the rollers to dry completely (approximately 10 minutes).

  5. Close the ADF cover tightly at both ends.
