hp 6500 office jet wireless
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I have an hp 6500 Officejet Wireless.  It recently stopped printing black.  Used automatic tool to clean print head.  Still no black. Other colors OK. Changed black ink cartridge.  Still no black.  Did manual clean of print head by soaking in warm water as per instructions.  Now get error message "ink system failure Please turn printer off and on".  Did this twice and still same result.  Cleaned contacts on print head and printer as instructed in hp note.  Still same result.  "ink system failue"

Did hard reset of printer by unplugging and plugging power back in.  Still same result. "ink system failure".

Print head was replaced on 6/27/2015.  Printer worked fine until now.

Any suggestions?

Hi @flr,

Thank you for showing your interest in HP Support Forums. It is a great place to find the help you need, from other users, HP experts, and other support personnel. I came across your post and wanted to assist you. I understand you are getting Ink system failure error message on your HP OfficeJet printer. Don't worry as I have a few suggestions which should help you resolve this issue,

Kudos to you for trying to figure out what needs to be done before posting your question in the HP forums?  You could actually try a few steps to see if this resolves the issue.

Please make sure that the printer is connected directly to the wall outlet and not to the surge protector.

Remove all the ink cartridges and then try to perform a hard reset on the printer.

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

Remove USB cable, if present.

Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.

Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord and then plug back the power cord to the printer.

Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.

Now insert the ink cartridges and then try to print a test page and check if it works.

Next thing, that you could try here is to remove all the ink cartridges from the printer and check what error do you see on the printer screen.

Try to check with one cartridge at a time and see what happens.

If your printer connected wirelessly, make sure to temporary connect the device with USB and then follow the link to check for the latest firmware update if available for your printer, using this website

Problem solved!!!  Thanks for your help.   Here's what happened.

I received your email of 3/14/17.   As you suggested, I changed power input from a surge suppressor to direct into wall outlet. The printer was still saying "Ink system failure".  I turned off the printer.   I left is off until this morning 3/16/17 which was over 24 hours of being off.   When I turned it on this morning by the front panel button,  I got this message "Install new cartridges or press OK to continue with used ones Magenta (M).  Used cartridges might not complete print head start up".   I pressed OK and printer displayed "Ink system failure, please turn printer off and then on".

Then I replaced the magenta cartridge.   Got "ink system failure message, please turn printer off and then on"  Turned printer off, waited 30 seconds and turned it on.  Got the message "Install new cartridges..............Yellow  (Y)"  Pressed  OK, and printer went through complete startup routine including cartridge alignment.  (I assumed I'd need to replace the yellow cartridge, so I started unwrapping a new yellow one.)

The printer completed the alignment routine, and looked like it was ready to print.  As a test, I printed a couple of word processing documents successfully.   So, problem solved.   I suspect that leaving the printer off for over 24 hours accomplised a hard reset.

I'm curious as to what caused the printer to stop printing black which was the original problem.  Do you have any idea what caused this?

Anyway, I now know to do a real hard reset procedure if I have this problem in the future .  Thanks again for your help.

I have done all of the things mentioned in this string: Cleaned print heads, replaced ink cartridges, soft and hard boot and plugged the printer directly to an outlet (not on a surge protector). Still have the Ink System Failure message. What else can I do? I have Windows 10.
