Hi @ATCC,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Switching from copper to fiber optic infrastructure for your telephone service can indeed affect how devices like fax machines operate, due to differences in how the signals are transmitted and handled. For your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M227fdn, here are some steps and considerations to address the fax issue you’re experiencing:

Check Compatibility with VoIP: Fiber optic services often use VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) instead of traditional analog phone lines. Fax machines, including those built into multifunction printers like yours, are primarily designed for analog phone signals. VoIP can cause issues because it digitizes and compresses voice data, which can interfere with the fax data.

Configure for VoIP Compatibility:

  • Error Correction Mode (ECM): Try disabling ECM, which can improve faxing over VoIP. ECM can interfere with fax transmission on digital phone services. You can disable this setting from your printer’s fax settings menu.
  • Fax Speed: Setting your fax transmission speed to a lower setting can also help. Slower speeds are more reliable over VoIP connections. Set the baud rate to 9600 bps or even lower if possible.

Manual Answering vs. Auto Answering: Bell’s suggestion to set your fax to immediate pick-up implies setting it to auto answer. This means the fax machine will automatically answer incoming calls after a set number of rings, which can help in ensuring that the fax picks up before any digital tone issues can interfere.

  • To set auto answer, access your fax settings and enable the Auto Answer function. Adjust the ring to answer setting to a lower number to ensure it picks up quickly.

Tone Recognition and Pulse Dialing:

  • Tone Recognition: Disabling any additional tone recognition features might help if these are causing conflicts with recognizing incoming fax tones.
  • Pulse Mode: Switching to pulse dialing is generally not necessary and unlikely to resolve the issue, as pulse dialing is an older technology mainly used with traditional analog lines. Most modern telecommunication infrastructures and devices use tone (DTMF) dialing.

Alternative Solutions:

  • Fax Gateway: If issues persist, consider using a Fax Gateway solution that converts fax to an email or another digital format. This bypasses the traditional fax method and could be more reliable with a fiber optic service.
  • Online Fax Service: Alternatively, an online fax service, which sends and receives faxes via email or a web portal, could completely bypass the need for using the fax hardware on a fiber line.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
