Hello,
We'll have to pull out the extender while printing and push it in after printing is done ( manually ).
If you have tried pushing in and out ( manually ) and if the issue still persists, please call HP TECH Support for further assistance .
Depending on , if the extender is replacable or not, the Tech would either replace the part or the Printer ( free if the printer is in Warranty)
If you are in US , the toll free # is 1-800-474-6836 .
If you are not in US , then log on to www.hp.com , at bottom-left corner there is a world map icon, click on it and then select the region you belong to, which would then provide support options for you for that region.
Regards,
Jabzi

hey man, not sure you got rid of your printer but i figured this out and i don't know if i should be happy or really pissed
take your paper out of the printer. look at the extender....flip that other "extender" part down (flat). on top, you'll see an indention to the right of the piece that "flips" upward. put your index finger underneath and place your thumb on top...pinch it and slightly pull (as if you are trying to pull it out)...as you do that...start of move the extender back into place (to the left). once you finally do that a few times...it will loosen up and it will be easy to put back and forth
attached a picture on how you should "pinch"...once you "pinch" it...pull towards you while moving it to the left. that should do it and from that point on...it'll be easy.

I have the exactly same problem!
In my case, I sprayed Wd-40 just a couple of drops
on the spot where in the above (stuck) image, "to open" area lies,
In other words, on looking down the (opened) stuck tray extender,
the right-most part, which contacts the (enclosing) normal paper tray at 90 degree angle.
Withe some wiggling and pushing back, the stuck parts will be loose.
I guess, Any lubricants will work.
Good Luck!
