trying to copy a legal size deed, have the legal paper in the main tray (door won't close of course) and the original in the feeder. can't get full size copies

I doubt this printer can copy the larger size in one piece.
Specifications > Scan limitations include:
Maximum scan size from glass: 21.6 x 29.7 cm (8.5 x 11.7 in)
The size limitation likely applies to the Copy mechanism, too.
The User Guide indicates that for copy, full size (letter) paper can be loaded into the tray or the ADF.
