scan to searchable pdf

HP Recommended

I have an HP Photosmart C4580.   On my old PC I was running Windows Vista and, using HP Solution Center, when I scanned documents to a pdf file they were searchable (or editable as it was called).

I got a new PC running Windows 7 and I installed the drivers for my printer. But now when I scan a document to a pdf file it is not searchable. No options are given to scan to a searchable file. HP Help says there is an option to select Searchable PDF but there is not.  I have installed updates to the driver but still the problem.  I have tried installing some HP OCR software but it does not install and says ' You do not need ths software update'.

Can anyone please help as I need to have searchable PDFs ?

Hello,

I want you to confirm couple of things, when installing the drivers, did you install the full installation?

If not, you should choose the complete install option.
Also, when doing that, you should check if that installer is getting you OCR or not in the custom settings.

I believe, for enabling searchable pdf's, you will need OCR software which comes with full installation of the HP software for your product.

You can download the full software for your product here:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=mp-74912-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&...

Apart from that, you can refer to the user manual which talks about this as well (Page 69-70):

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply.

Yes I did install the full/complete installation.  In fact I have done so more than once.

The OCR software does not seem to be installed as part of this.  There wwas no opportunity to install custom settings. On clicking the exe file, it just goes ahead and installs.

It was fine under Vista but does not work under Windows 7.

The User Manual does not help. It is not a problem of usage. The option to scan as a searchable or editable PDF is simply not there.

Hi,

I have got the solution.

HP Scan you have a 'Save as PDF' shortcut.

When I highlight the shortcut I get the following properites on the left:

* Scan size, Output type, Resolution,

* and finally ... File type... if it's missing keep reading

With File tye I can change it from PDF to Searchable PDF.

Well, at first I think I could not and I did not have the Filetype property unless I entered Advanced settings.

What seem to have helped:

I used 'Save as Editable Text (OCR)' option once, and since than I got Searchable PDF option.

Hope that helps.

BR,

Maciej
