Hi @grumpyevans,

Thanks for engaging in HP support Forums! This is a wonderful location to converse with the community, get assistance and find tips! I understand you are having issues with the computer no longer boots into Windows after the recent update. Don't worry as I have a few suggestions which should help you resolve this issue.

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

Have you tried to make any changes on the PC before the issue started?

In the meantime, let's try these steps here:

Perform a Hard reset on the PC

Many startup errors and other problems can be resolved by decreasing the amount of power stored in hardware components. Decreasing stored power is sometimes referred to as a "Hard Reset". Use the following steps to perform a hard reset on a computer:

  1. If Windows is open, click Start and then Shutdown.

If Windows is not open and the computer has power, press and hold the power button on the computer until the computer shuts off.

  2. With the power off, disconnect the power cord from the back of the computer.

  3. With the power off and the power cord disconnected, press the power button on the computer for 5 seconds. The power light indicator on or near the power button might turn on briefly but then go out.

  4. Reconnect the power cord and turn on the power.

If the issue persists, Since it started After updating to Windows 10 RS2 you might encounter a black screen with a static, or non-blinking, cursor when starting the computer. The computer might stay in this condition for five minutes, or up to 15 or 20 minutes.

Use the following instructions to resolve this and start Windows normally.

If you have not disabled App Readiness:

  1. Turn on the computer.

  2. Wait 15 to 20 minutes, if necessary, for the boot process to complete and the Windows desktop to load.

  3. Download and install HP Image Enhancement for System Logon.

  4. Restart the computer after completing installation of the SoftPaq.

If you have previously disabled App Readiness:

  1. Open Windows.

  2. In the search field, type Services.

  3. In the search results, click Services Desktop app.

  4. Select App Readiness.

    Figure : App Readiness

Services open with App Readiness selected
  5. On the App Readiness properties page, in the General tab, set the Startup type to Manual.

    Figure : Startup type

Properties page with Startup type set to Manual
  6. Click Apply and OK to close the properties.

  7. Download and install HP Image Enhancement for System Logon.

  8. Restart the PC after completing installation of the SoftPaq.

If the issue persists, I would suggest you follow the steps suggested in the support document for -
