We had a power outage last night and this morning my computer asks me to check the hdmiin put cable. I never had an hdmi cable attached to it.

It could be your monitor producing the message, when it does not detect video-output from your computer.

Possibilities:

  1. Your monitor has multiple inputs (VGA, DVI, HDMI, S-Video, Component, Composite, Coaxial), and the monitor is now "listening" to the HDMI input, rather than the input that previously was active, before the power-outage. Reset it.
  2. The video-adapter on your computer got "fried" by a power-surge. Try connecting your monitor to a different computer, to prove that it still works.
