Hi @jafs67,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're experiencing a common issue where the SSDs in your HP 8300 computers are suddenly not being recognized by the system. This can happen due to various reasons, including hardware failure, firmware issues, or even a problem with the system's BIOS settings. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the issue:
1. Check SSD Connections
- Power Down and Unplug: Make sure the computer is completely powered off and unplugged.
- Open the Case: Open the computer case and carefully check the SSD connections. Ensure that the SATA and power cables are securely connected to both the SSD and the motherboard.
- Reseat the SSD: Sometimes simply disconnecting and reconnecting the SSD can resolve connection issues.
2. Check BIOS Settings
- Enter BIOS/UEFI: Turn on your computer and enter the BIOS/UEFI setup (usually by pressing a key like F2, F10, DEL, or ESC during startup).
- Check Drive Detection: Look for your SSD in the list of detected drives. If it's not listed, try setting the SATA mode to AHCI if it isn't already.
- Reset to Default: Consider resetting the BIOS/UEFI settings to their default values in case something has changed.
3. Test the SSD in Another Computer
- Transfer the SSD: If possible, connect the SSD to another computer to see if it is recognized there. This can help determine if the issue is with the SSD or the original computer.
4. Check for Firmware Updates
- Firmware Update: Visit the SSD HP website and check if there's a firmware update available for your SSD model. Updating the firmware can sometimes resolve compatibility and detection issues.
5. Test with Different Cables and Ports
- Swap Cables: Try using a different SATA cable and power connector to rule out a faulty cable.
- Change Ports: Connect the SSD to a different SATA port on the motherboard.
6. Check for Motherboard Issues
- Capacitors and Components: Inspect the motherboard for any visible signs of damage, such as bulging capacitors.
- Test Another Drive: Connect a different known-good drive to see if it is recognized. This can help determine if the issue is with the SSD or the motherboard.
7. Power Supply Issues
- Check Power Supply: Ensure your power supply unit (PSU) is providing sufficient power and is functioning correctly. A failing PSU can cause intermittent issues with components like SSDs.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
