If Windows Hello isn't available on my device, why do I have a fingerprint scanner?

HP ENVY TouchSmart 17 Notebook PC
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have a fingerprint scanner on my laptop, which has never worked since I bought this laptop. When I go into the sign-in options, it states "Windows Hello isn't available on this device." So, if it isn't available, why does my laptop even have the fingerprint scanner. It seems very pointless to me.

@saviabbie, welcome to the forum.

When requesting help you should always include the make/model (i.e. p6-xxxx) of the computer and/or monitor. This information is necessary for us to review the specifications of them.

@old_geekster,

I'm sorry, I thought it was listed in my original question, product name and operating system area.

Again, it is a HP ENVY TouchSmart 17 Notebook PC

I don't see anything about a p6-XXXX number anywhere on it..

Thank you for the additional information, @saviabbie.

The P6-xxxx is used as an example.  Here is a guide to help you find the model or product number of your notebook.
