amd graphic card upgrade computer will not boot up but did on other amd card

hpe 575 uk
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi there,
I upgraded the graphics card years ago to a AMD r290, it worked fine, I now upgraded to a AMD R9 390x, bought a new ps 850w, the fans go on the card, and my system sounds like its booting up, but nothing, I have tryed everything. I also cleared the CMOS. Someone said that The R9 390x didn't work because the Cleveland-GL8 motherboard has a legacy BIOS (no UEFI support). If this is the reason why the new card will not work, could you give my a download for my motherboard to support UEFI please. Or, what is the fasted card my computer will take.

Hi,

Most AMD R9 290 graphics cards are UEFI enabled. Sapphire has a couple of models that are not UEFI enabled. Sapphire also has a couple of R9 295x2 models that are not UEFI enabled but are water cooled. $$$$$

Your specific mobo, processor and chipset will most likely limit the performance of the high end graphics cards either due to processor speed, memory bandwidth or PCIe slot bandwidth.

I don't know of an official HP UEFI BIOS for the Cleveland-GL8 motherboard.

BTW---I once heard that some models of the AMD R9 290 had no tolerance for PCIe version 2 slots.

Hi there and thx.

Is there a way of looking at the specs. of a card and seeing if they will work in my comp. ??? Will it show in the specs. that they are UEFI enabled, or what do I look for in the specs.

Do you know of a unofficial UEFI download for my BIOS motherboard.

The 290 has worked fine for two years, but now there are lots of jaggered lines on my scren and game are so slow, and new card is needed. I wanted to buy a card that would run games like the new Forza 7, and by a 4k screen, but not sure a top end card will run as my motherboard.

Hi,

Sapphire at one time published a spread sheet of all of its graphic cards with some amount of detail but then stopped with its new models. Check the Sapphire site.

Hi,

The NVIDIA GTX 1xxx and 7xx graphics cards are not going to work in your PC.

You need a legacy graphics card.  Perhaps Ebay has a graphics card that is same make and model as your failing graphics card.

Review the attached Sapphire graphics card spread sheet.

Hi,

There are various sites on the internet that you can obtain information about NVIDIA and AMD graphics cards.  It's just something that you have to research and learn about to determine the capabilities of specific graphics cards.

Hi,

Your PC doesn't have a verion 8 BIOS or higher which means that UEFI enabled graphics card are not going to work.
