Cannot boot from CD-ROM

My friend has a 2 week old Compaq Desktop, KY21AA, running Vista Home Premium.

When I tried to "Shrink" the Vista drive using the Vista Disk Management Utility, in order to load Ubuntu 9.04 Linux, the PC now will not now allow me to boot from the CD-ROM.

I swapped the HD wirh a Ubuntu Loaded Drive and it works, but I still cannot boot from the CD.

I went into the Phoenix Award BIOS, and I cannot "Enable" the Boot from CD option!?

Any help, please.

Re: Cannot boot from CD-ROM

There's 2 ways you can do this.

1) Go into the BIOS and go under the BOOT menu, choose Boot Device Priority, hit enter, and you'll see normally the boot order, Floppy, CDROM, hard drive, hard drive and network boot in that order. Go to the first one that says floppy and hit enter and change it to CD-ROM group. Save changes and exit and let it reboot and should work.

2) Each time you turn on the pc, hold down or press ESC repeadetly and it will give u a boot menu of where you want to boot from. As long as the disc drive works and disc is bootable is should work.

Re: Cannot boot from CD-ROM

I did what you sugested but it still will not boot from CD-ROM.

The ONLY way it will boot is from the Hard Drive.

In the BIOS Setup, under the Boot Tab, it lists:

Boot Device Priority

1st Boot Device [ Floppy Group ]

2nd Boot Device [ CD-ROM Group ]

3rd Boot Device [ HDD Group ]

4th Boot Device [ Network Boot Group ]

Then below the above 4 Choices are:

> Floppy Group Boot Priority     [ Not Installed ]

> CD-ROM Group Boot Priority [ Not Installed ]

> HDD Group Boot Priority    [ ST380815AS ]

> Network Group Boot Priority  [ Not Installed ]

The Floppy, CD-ROM and Network options are "Grayed Out" and cannot be changed.

No matter what I try, I cannot get the CD-ROM Boot to work.

[ Edited ]

Bumping this thread because I have exact same problem unresolved.

"CD-ROM Group Boot Priority [ Not Installed ]" is grayed out and I can not boot from recovery HP CD.

I've reset bios to default, but the computer is not seeing the cd rom to boot from it.

Solved my problem, see below Smiley Happy

Re: Cannot boot from CD-ROM

After another hour of so of poking around, I discovered that a cable was unplugged to the motherboard from the DVD drive.  After plugging it in, the bios recognized the drive and I was back in business.  Hope this helps others, check all cable connections.
