HDD EXTERNAL DOESN'T APPEAR AFTER A WINDOWS 7 !! also is not in the Disk manager

Hi! 

I did some windows updates because some virus is in my work network: 

1. At first i've installed a service pack: SW_DVD5_NTRL_Win_7SP1_All_Lng_Patch_Client_Server_X17-23698

2. And then, the two patches: 

windows6.1-kb4012212-x86_6bb04d3971bb58ae4bac44219e7169812914df3f

windows6.1-kb4012215-x86_e5918381cef63f171a74418f12143dabe5561a66

(both are for windows 6.1... and my PC OS is w7)

3. The machine restarted automatically, but my HDD was connected :smileyembarrassed:  

4. After that my PC doesn't recognize my HDD (BIOS and windows), there's not Unit (RAW, NTFS, FAT).  

I've tryed with other PCs but the result is the same!! I've already checked in Disks manager and Device Manager... but i can't see nothing of my disc.

Pls help me!!! i  need the information in it 😞  it's new..

An external disk-drive has four or five major components:

* the casing, which may have its own ON/OFF switch;

* the data-cable, between the unit and the USB port;

* a disk-drive-to-USB adapter'

* a standard 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch "internal" disk-drive;

* a power-supply (maybe not needed for a 2.5-inch disk-drive, since the USB cable provides enough wattage).

1. Inspect that the cable is still "good" (not "broken"). 

2. Check that the power-supply is working -- any small vibration, or slight heat from the unit?

3. Look for an ON/OFF switch (or slider).

4. Remove the casing, to expose the adapter and the disk-drive.

5. Disconnect the disk-drive from the adapter.

6. Connect the disk-drive as a "secondary" disk-drive in some other computer, to see if the "bare" disk-drive is detectable.

7. Look online for a commercial "data-recovery service".  They charge a lot, because they usually can repair the disk-drive, just long-enough to copy everything from it onto a brand-new disk-drive.

I would have a very-different guess, given that your external disk-drive does not work in "other" computers.

On other computers, when you connect the disk-drive, does Windows make the usual "low-bong-high-bong" sound, as it does when any USB device is connected?  If not, then it's a hardware problem within the external disk-drive.

When I open a command-line prompt, and type   VER   and press ENTER, I see:

  Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]

on my computer, running Windows 7.

So do i... Version 6.1. 

The strange thing is that my computer doesn't detect other disks, but if i check the disk in other PC, no one recognize it.

I had a problem with another one (it turned to RAW Format),  the software  Easy US Data recovery helped me!

But this HDD is worst! there's no forma, no unit, and it's energized (There's a blue led turned On). Is an ADATA HD710M. It's practically NEW (i buyed 3 months ago). I suspect that de windows update did something in the software/firmware of it ! 😞

None at all?

This points to a hardware problem with the external disk-drive.

But, that disk-drive *WAS* detected by the BIOS, and *WAS* detected in "Disk Management".  Correct?

So, the power-supply seems to be OK.

That narrows the problem down to either the electronics physically connected to the disk-drive, or to the SATA-to-USB adapter, or to the data-cable between the disk-drive and the USB port.

Its warranty should still be valid, i.e., the manufacturer will replace it, at no cost to you.

I disagree that Windows Update has "damaged" the disk-drive to the point where the disk-drive is not detected by the BIOS.

Remove the disk-drive from the case, disconnect the adapter, and attach the disk-drive as a "secondary" disk-drive in some other computer, to see if the "bare" disk-drive can be detected on some other computer.

OK, EXCELLENT, THE WARRANTY IS VALID, THEY GAVE ME 1 YEAR (the normal time),  BUT I GUESS THEY DON'T RECOVER THE INFO OR FIX THE PROBLEM...  I HAVE TO CALL THEM FOR ASKING IT.  AND IF I TAKE OUT THE CASE, THE WARRANTY IS GOING TO BE CANCELED! SO, I HAVE TO DECIDE, IF I TRY BY MYSELF OR TAKE IT TO A "LABO" SPECIALIST OR WAIT FOR THE WARRANTY.

SINCERILY, I PREFER SPEND MONEY OR THE DISK, BUT I JUST NEED THE INFO INSIDE IT! I'm electronics engineer. I BET THE solid State  HDDs ARE SO MUCH BETTER... now i have 3 damaged disks  !
