HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop - 15-dk1019na
Microsoft Windows 11

Laptop performs as normal when plugged in. However, several times when i have used the laptop unplugged, for example use the battery down to 60% and then switch it off; the next day when i turned the laptop on, the battery still said it was at 60%, but after less than one minute of use, just enough time to open microsoft edge and start searching, it dies and i have to plug it to see that is has completely run out of charge. This has happened 2 or 3 times. The chart of battery life found in settings shows it was at a steady 60% overnight before rapidly dropping after i switched it on. Using the HP support assistant battery health check feature at the time rated the battery health as weak, but after recharging the laptop, it has since only said the battery health is normal.

Any advice for possible further steps/checks before having to buy a new battery?

Hello @ZakaryD

Do the following trick ...

(1) Open windows <device manager> and uninstall "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery

- Right click on "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery"

- Click "Uninstall device"

- Confirm your choice if you see a popup notification

(2Shutdown notebook

(3) Disconnect charger, press and hold power button for 30 seconds.

(4Enter BIOS

- Turn off computer and wait five seconds

- Turn on computer, and then immediately press the [ESC] key repeatedly until the Startup Menu opens

- Press [F10] to open BIOS Setup Utility or [F2] to open HP Diagnostics

===>>> let it stay there or run HP Diagnostic Test loops to drain battery (don't start windows operating system AND don't connect charger !) until it is switching off automatically !

Note: If you unexpectedly started Windows, you have to repeat (1) (2) (3)

(5) Plugin charger and wait until battery is fully charged (don't start windows operating system !) and check charging led.

(6) If you do have no charging led, wait at least 2 hours ...

(7) Start notebook and log in to windows. Now windows acpi battery device and battery management system are synchronized. It should show 98-100% battery level.

(8) If battery level is too low and it's loosing capacity too fast, it has to be replaced !

(9) Please report your results
