HP Omen 17 - Cannot Game for Longer than 15 Mins

HP Omen 17-an0xx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi Guys,

I am having very frustrating problems with my laptop (Omen17 2017), whenever I play a game, the laptop screen just fades to black and the entire laptop becomes unresponsive and I have ot do a hard reset (hold down the power button to reboot).

When I restart the laptop I get this error in the notification panel:

I noticed that the tempreratures were  really high so I did the following:

1. Bought and used a cooling pad for my laptop.

2. Repasted the latop.

3. Undervolted the laptop.

4. Updated the BIOS.

5. Ensured that all of my drivers are up to date.

NONE of this has worked. As I use a secondary monitor and I had Intel Tuning software running while I played and noticed that the temperatures kept going really high when I was playing the like of Halo 2 MCC and Metro 2033.

I did notice that putting the laptop is whisper mode and thus limiting the FPS to 40, I did not have any problems, however as I have a 120Hz G-Sync enabled laptop, I see NO reason why I should settle for 40fps.

I would LOVE for someone to help me out with this as I am at my wits end and am looking to offload the laptop.

My specs are below:

@CodeJBDA Due to the current global COVID-19 situation, we're seeing an influx of customers coming in for support and we appreciate your patience.

That said, there are many ways to increase FPS and overall system performance:

  • Update the BIOS.

For notebook PCs, go to HP Notebook PCs - Updating the BIOS

  • Update the graphics driver.

Go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads, enter your PC model, then select the driver for your graphics card.

  • Most games allow you to change the graphics settings. Using a lower graphic quality often improves FPS.

  • Close any applications or programs that are not being used.

  • Turn on Game Mode. Game Mode is a new feature in Windows 10 Creators Update that improves gaming performance by limiting background processes and programs from using system resources while a game is running.

    1. Press the Windows key and G to open the Game bar.

    2. In the game bar, click Settings.

    3. Click the check box next to the game title to enable Game Mode for that game.

Plug notebook PCs into an AC adapter to give the graphics card more power.

(Also, HP does not recommend using 3rd party tools/software to identify temperature or system summary, as they may not be accurate)
