OMEN by HP 17-cb0007ng
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

I have been using the Omen 17 for three weeks now and I ran into several issues.

- There is no option to enable XMP profile and thus very limited memory upgrade options for 32GB.
HyperX 2666 has JEDEC profiles for 2666MHz but was causing crashes in dual channel mode.
Crucial Ballistix and GSkill will only run 2400MHz without XMP.
So that leaves us with the basic Crucial modules. Good things is they are cheap, but also have as bad timings as the stock Samsung RAM. At least they are dual rank.
That's a shame because there are a couple of games where memory bandwidth is a bottleneck, Overwatch as the most prominent example pretty much scales 1:1 with increased memory speed, but Frostbite games benefit as well.

Why is this XMP disabled on a high end notebook?

- There is also no Intel RAID option in the bios. Come on. We have two NVME slots but can only use them in legacy mode and don't create a hardware raid? I put a chepao SATA SSD into the 2,5 drive bay and installed Windows there so I can create a dynamic disc array in Windows over the two NVME slots, but with the OS on a slow SATA drive, performance isn't as good as it could be. And yes, Raid0 does indeed improve performance of SSDs, at least with the two Crucial P1s that I am using. https://www.realhardwarereviews.com/crucial-p1-raid-review/

My CPU is constantly overheating. GPU is fine and stays within the low 70ies.
I set High Performance energy plan in Windows and High Performance mode in Omen Command center and while playing modern warfare the CPU temperature will stay above 90°C all the time, hitting 100°C occasionally where starts to throttle.  This is with 16-17°C ambient room temperature! The fans are not blocked.

I tried to undvervolt with Throttle Stop, setting a -160mV undervolt on both CPU and COU cache, but it doesn't help.

I had four gaming laptops in the past few years and they weren't high end models like the Omen 17. I have never encountered a bios that is that limited. At least XMP and Raid mode where always available.

@ColinMacLaren Welcome to HP Community!

I understand that you are facing issues with the HP omen laptop.

HP Pc’s uses a customized BIOS setting (Tattooed BIOS) of which some features including overclocking and increasing the VRAM are locked.

This is done in the best interest of safeguarding the PC for the optimal performance and not to cause any extensive component failure.

To conclude, the VRAM on your PC is already shared with a specific value and its locked and cannot be changed.

Hope the information shared will help you. Please share it for more.

Do necessary modification and send customer

Basically the BIOS is locked he cannot do any such changes.

Try updating the computer, this will install the latest updates -

Step 1 Windows Updates -

1) In the search box, type, and open Windows Updates.

2) Check for updates.

3) If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.

Step 2 HP Support Assistant Updates -

Sorry, but this is a response that has nothing to do with my questions.

I wasn't asking for overlcoking, I was asking about support for XMP memory profiles for system memory which has been the standard for years now. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_presence_detect#XMP

@ColinMacLaren

I understand your concerns.

HP has locked a few settings on your computer which are being managed by the system configuration as the device is configured to its optimal performance, and XMP is a part of the locked feature.

If the device didn't go with RAID, we don't recommend using it, however, you are free to utilize it at your own discretion

The Omen device he has: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c06396151 has a CPU (https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/191045/intel-core-i7-9750h-processor-12m-cache-... ) that supports 100°C temp.

However, if you feel the device is overheating, use this link to troubleshoot the same: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c01657439.

Have a  nice day!!
