I am getting tired of buying color cartridges.  I only print in black but every so often my printer says I am out of one of the 3 color cartridges.  You are supposed  to be able to print with one or more depleted cartridges but my printer won't let me do it.  I keep having to buy color cartridges.  It would  be cheaper to buy a new printer.  How can I get the printer to work even though I get a message saying one of my color cartridges needs replacing and it won't let me print?

Welcome to HP Support Forum. To protect itself from damages it needs all inks during the warming up process. On some printers (mainly the ones which only have 2 ink cartridges: 1 black and 1 tri-color) allow us to print when one color ink is empty.

Back to your printer, you can set it to print Balck ink only to save color inks. Please try

(a) Double click printer icon on desktop,
(b) Click Set Preferences,
(c) Click Advanced,
(d) Select "Black Ink only" for Print in Grayscale
(e) Click Ok/Apply ...

Note: Again, printer still needs all color inks and it will consume a very small amount of inks during the warming up process.

Regards.
