Operating System: Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan

printer keeps resetting.  will not print.  not sure how to do a software update

Your first troubleshooting step is to disconnect any network or usb cables or turn off wireless networking and then power cycle the printer. If it comes to ready and  you can print any of the reports from the control panel of the printer then likely the printer is ok. Next step is to make sure that there are no print jobs pending on any computer that connects to the printer. Once that is done  you can reconnect either the USB or network cable and attempt to update the firmware following the instructions at support.hp.com.
