Dual Boot Windows 8.1/Linux Ubuntu-Mint HP Envy 15 K112-NL

Hello, I own an HP Envy 15 notebook K112-NL and have considerable difficulty installing Linux Ubuntu and Linux Mint in dual-boot and triple-boot. Both with Secure Boot enabled or disabled, either enabled or disabled legacy, both with fast boot enabled or disabled and also with the default boot from internal CD / DVD ROM, it is impossible to install Linux alongside Windows. I managed for a moment to start the Linux Mint DVD but it is planted to the first screen. I think just by reading other forums, that HP does everything to not allow this operation. Has anyone had the same problem? If yes how he solved it? Thank you. [Google Translation]

Grazie.

Dual Boot Windows 8.1/Linux Ubuntu-Mint HP Envy 15 K112-NL

Hi @cdeffen

Welcome to the HP Support forum. Thank you for posting !

It's not that HP does not allow this - it is just that your PC is designed for Windows.

We live in a Windows-based world (when it comes to personal computers) and most computers are designed with Microsoft and Windows in mind. That is why we (Linux users - I also use Linux-based OS on my personal computer) might come accross certian obstacles.

Windows 8/8.1/10 and UEFI have an option known as Secure boot which by design should prevent any other OS to load (other than Windows) for security reasons.

In order to install Ubuntu or Linux Mint, please do the following:

1. Turn of fast start-up of Windows

Control Panel > Power Options > "Choose what the power button does" > uncheck the options for fast start-up

2. Disable Secure boot and Enable Legacy mode

Please, shutdown the computer using the power button

Power it on. As soon as you press the power-on button, immediately begin hitting the Esc button (like tap-tap-tap).

This should open a HP Startup Menu which may look similar to this one

Choose F10 for BIOS options

* Ensure Secure Boot is disabled.

* Ensure Legacy mode is enabled

* Do not forget to SAVE the UEFI/BIOS changes and exit when ready.

Details>> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03653226

3. Once ready, shut down your PC and prepare the other things

4. Ensure you download latest ISO images - x64 editions -  Ubuntu 16.04 or Linux Mint 18 - LTS editions

Note - x64 editions

Burn them on a DVD or write on a blank empty USB drive. Here is how:

5. Insert the DVD or USB drive into your PC.

6. Power computer on. As soon as you press the power-on button, immediately begin hitting the Esc button (like tap-tap-tap).

This should open a HP Startup Menu. Press F9 for boot options

In the boot selection, choose the DVD or USB with Ubuntu in them.

Your PC should now boot the installation media.
