We have an HP 4540s ProBook at my work. One day the webcam stopped working and as I am the IT guy i had to bring it home and fix it. At first I thought it was a bad camera or loose cable so i disassembled and the reassembled the screen area. This did not solve anything, I opened the YouCam software and it said I had no camera installed.
After searching the web for hours I finally figured out the problem and it is driver related.
Here is what I did.
1. Open Device Management by typing devmgmt.msc in the run box
2. Expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers
3. Right click on every item that says "Generic USB Hub", and "USB Root Hub" then select uninstall, repeat for every entry. I think I even uninstalled the "USB Composite Device"
4. Then at the top of the device manager window select Action>Scan for Hardware Changes
5. If it worked correctly you should see HP HD Webcam under Imaging Devices (see following screenshot)
6. If you do not see the HD WebCam entry then delete the USB Device Entrys AGAIN, I had to do it twice to get it to work!
