HP Envy m6-p113dx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello. I have a problem with my HP Envy m6 notebook. Every time I boot up the laptop, within a few minutes, everything freezes. The cursor doesn't move, the keyboard doesn't react, nor does it react to the screen being touched. I'll have to shut it off completely before rebooting. Then rinse and repeat. It's like a carousel of dread.

I have to install a windows 10 update, but its not letting me, since my laptop's always freezing up. Before rebooting, I mashed the f2 key repeatedly and pulled up the system tests. I went ahead with the extensive one and everything seemed fine, except with the battery. I need to replace it since the storage capacity of it is very low. But if I plug in my charger, and keep it plugged in, the laptop starts up fine. (If anyone could tell me where I can put an order on a replacement battery for this laptop, that'd be great.)

I did do a factory reset before the freezing started, to rid of all the junk in my computer, if that information is any help. Should I perform one again? I don't know...

This is the model: m6-p113dx
I've probably got this laptop around 2016 or so.

Please help.

Hello @gaze_lle

Welcome to the HP Support forum.

1. With regards to the battery - check the HP Parts store >> https://parts.hp.com/Hpparts/CountryChoice.aspx

Also, check these articles:

2. With regards to the freezing/slowness

2.1 If you know how to and if you can, please, restore the PC to factory default condition (reinstall Windows)

2.2 After successful recovery, make sure you don't have things to slow you down

- uninstall McAfee products manually by right clicking the Start button -> Apps and features

- download and run the McAfee consumer product removal tool -> http://us.mcafee.com/apps/supporttools/mcpr/mcpr.asp

- open Task Manager , go to Start up tab. Disable anything unwanted/unneeded such as Dropbox, HP Support Assistant, etc. Here are details >> https://www.howtogeek.com/162446/how-to-manage-startup-applications-in-windows-8/

- ensure Windows 10 is fully updated

2.3 Restart the computer and things should be better

2.4 Optimize

- defragment your Hard Disk Drive (if you have hard disk drive) > https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/8933-optimize-defrag-drives-windows-10-a.html

- run Disk Clean Up - cleanmgr.exe > https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/3012-disk-cleanup-open-use-windows-10-a.html

2.5 Remove unneeded and temporary files. Download and run CCLeaner (from Piriform Avast) with the extra options checked. Here are instructions

2.6 You may wish to stop some of the Windows Telemetry by using free tools such as Spybot AntiBeacon or DWS Lite

Run them in Professional mode and made your own choices

3. Restart the computer and things should be better eventually 🙂

Hope this helps. Please, provide your feedback/update and let me know if any issues.

Hey, thank you for replying! I've tried to reinstall windows, but when it got to the "Getting things ready" message, everything froze. I already tried to update Windows 10, alas it just freezes.

I've disabled everything in my start up tab, but I can't do much else, since the laptop will just freeze on me - and I can only unfreeze it by shutting off the laptop and re-booting it again.

Edit: I tried to reset my laptop through Advanced Startup Options, but it failed with an error saying, "There was a problem resetting your PC." If I boot up my laptop in safe-mode, I get hit with "This app can't open, This app can't be open by the built in administrator, sign in with another account and try again" but the freezing does stop.

What do I do now?

OK,

here is a new strategy. Since you are unable to reinstall Windows, please, follow it

1. Test for hardware issues to rule out hardware problem

Use Esc/F2 during start up and perform hardware diagnostics of the RAM/HDD or Fast check >> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JXUp43ahHA

Let me know the results.

If the diagnostics pass without any issues, proceed with step 2

2. Windows reinstallation / clean installation :

- You can directly download Windows 10 ISO from MS site or download >> Media creation tool from Microsoft site, create installation USB pendrive and  proceed with clean installation/reinstallation.

Download:

Make sure you select the proper version (64 bit)

Media Creation tool will always provide you with the latest Windows version/build - now 1709 Fall Creators Update.

- When download completes, you will need to write  the ISO image and boot from a bootable media. You will need a blank USB pendrive (min 4 GB capacity). Use the Media Creation tool.

When ready with the USB drive :

Please, shutdown the computer using the power button (pressed and hold for 5-10 seconds).

Insert the Windows USB thumdrive prepared previously

Power on the PC.

As soon as you press the power-on button, immediately start hitting the Esc button repeatedly (like tap-tap-tap).

This should open a HP Startup Menu

Choose F9 to open Boot options. Select the USB thumb drive as a boot option.

- Follow the on-screen instructions to install Windows 10. Perform clean installation/custom installation (not repair).

Delete all existing partitions and install Windows on Disc 0 Unallocated space

- After successful Windows installation, install drivers taken from HP web site or via Windows Update/Device Manager >> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03330139

- Make sure Windows is Activated by going to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Activation

- You may wish to stop some of the Windows Telemetry by using free tools such as Spybot AntiBeacon or DWS Lite

- Do not install 3rd party security programs

Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes

Thank you so much for the long and extensive solutions, but I managed to fix it myself using the HP recovery manager. Again, thank you very much for helping me.
