HP Laptop 14-cm)xx
Microsoft Windows 10 in S Mode

When laptop would not boot (black screen, continuous disk access for 2 days) took the option to reinstall and keep nothing. Following the reinstall, Windows is not activated. All advice appears to be that the Product Key is hard coded into the BIOS and will activate automatically but no joy after 2 days. Cannot open Microsoft Store. Event Viewer: Software Protection Service Failed to Start: Access denied.

How was the reinstall option offered? Was this something from HP?

The continuous drive access is a strong indicator of a failing drive, so I am very surprised that the PC was even able to reinstall Windows.

Reinstall via usual Windows Recovery, accessed by multiple restarts of the laptop. CHKDSK reports no errors. Constant disk access appeared to be Windows writing to the User profile.

Well, I'm running Win11 and not getting the constant disk activity -- but I'm not using S Mode -- so maybe that is the underlying factor.
