Ok, so I recently got a virus on my 4 year old laptop. It REALLY messed up my laptop to the point where I can barely do anything. I can't login, go into safe mode, go into recovery mode. All I can do is get data on the laptop and go into BIOs. I'm not tech savvy at all and I've been working on this for hours. None of the other solutions online seem to be working and I'm half-tempted to say "screw it" and get a new laptop, but I really wanna see if this one is salvageable. I've also tried booting it with a usb and don't have any recovery disks. Please help!

Hi @BoringUsername2,

Thank you for posting on HP Support Forums. It is a great place to find the help you need, from other users, HP experts, and other support personnel. I see from the post that you are having issues with the computer not booting properly after being infected by the virus. Don't worry I'll try my best to help you with this,

Let's start off by performing a Hard Reset on the notebook:

Perform a Hard reset on the notebook: A power reset (or hard restart) clears all information from the computer's memory without erasing any personal data. Performing a power reset might fix conditions such as Windows not responding, a blank display, software freezing, the keyboard stops responding, or other external devices locking up.

Run a System diagnostics test as well as an extensive test on the Hard drive and Memory from F2 (Please capture the failure ID for further assistance).

Depending on the test results, if all the test passes, I would suggest you perform a system recovery. Doing this will wipe off everything and set the computer back to the original factory conditions. So, please remember to back up your data before initiating system recovery. If for some reason the recovery fails. The only other way to install Windows would be to order the recovery media for your laptop and using the recovery media you can install Windows. You can check if the recovery media is available online on www.hp.com/drivers by entering the exact model no. of your laptop. To find the exact model no. click here: http://hp.care/2bygf7l

Otherwise, you could also reach HP phone support to order the recovery media. If your product is out of warranty, please choose paid options to get the tech support number.

The hard reset never works at the moment. I did run a system test and the Hard Drive Short DST Check failed. The Failure ID is 60DXV9-6PH8LN-MFGJWJ-60WH03. What do I do now?

Hi @BoringUsername2,

Thank you for replying,

I appreciate your time and efforts,

As I understand you did try to perform the hardware test which resulted with a failure ID: 60DXV9-6PH8LN-MFGJWJ-60WH03

Here's what the ID represents: Hard Disk 1 Quick Test Failure

You will need to get the hard drive replaced, this can be done either using the HP Part Store Or call the HP Phone support for a repair service.
