HP Notebook 1tb (64-bit)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My computer first started showing the automatic repairing screen, but it would get stuck on 65% every time I would start the computer. Now it won't update saying each update was a fail since the September update.  I opened the command section and it showed the hard disk as dirty, but every time i try to reset the whole pc it just takes me to the repairing screen and doesn't take off for hours until i shut it down.

Now it doesn't even take me to the account login even if i turn it off many times nor can i click the f11 button without just sending me to the black logo screen. I barely have 1 month with the computer

Can someone help me.

Hello @lizzzyy,

Welcome to the HP Support forum. Thank you for posting.

This is happening because Windows cannot start/boot .It may be caused due to hardware problem (e.g. your HDD or RAM) or it may be caused by faulty Windows Update, some other faulty update/driver, corrupted bootloader / Boot Configuration Data in Windows etc.... I have never seen Windows to successfully repair itself automatically - it has always failed. Anyway...

1. Try hard restart/hard reset.

Press the power on-button on your PC and hold it for about 5-10 seconds until your computer powers off completely.

Remove and unplug any external periferals and accessories.

Press once the power-on button to turn on the PC and wait if it will start now. Wait...

If it still fails to load properly, go ahead with the next steps

2. Perform some basic hardware checks to rule out hardware problem

- Please, shutdown the computer using the power button (pressed and hold for a few seconds until PC powers off)

- Power the computer back on.

As soon as you press the power-on button, immediately begin hitting the Esc button (like tap-tap-tap) before any logo appears. This should open a HP Startup Menu

- Choose F2 to open System Diagnostics. Follow the on-screen instructions to perform System Test >> Quick test.

This will check major hardware componets for issue (do it just in case) . Here is more info >> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JXUp43ahHA

If there are no system checks/no quick tests, perform HDD (hard disk drive) and RAM check (memory check).

Let me know the test results. If the tests pass without issues, continue. If not, please, let me know

3. Repeat steps 1-2 above but when HP Startup menu opens, please choose F11 for System Recovery options.

The computer should boot from it's recovery partition to open you various recovery options. Note, that F11 option will only work if the recovery partition is there (not deleted) and intact. From there, you have prenty of options to choose from. Every HP computer comes with recovery partition present to assist in tough moments.

Please, perform "System Restore" first in an attempt to fix the issue. Please, restore back to previous days (restore point) where the issue was not present. Here is more info:

Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes. Provide your feedback/reply.

Thank you for following the instructions.

The error code you provide tells me that the hard disk drive (HDD) has failed.  This is hardware problem. Since this is faulty HDD/hardware component, you will probably not be able to recovery your files. If you want to attempt data recovery, please let me know and I may post additional instructions.

Here are your options on fixing the problem:

1) If your computer is still under warranty, please contact HP Support and inform them. They will work with you about the way to replace the faulty component.  Contact HP:

2) If your computer is with warranty period expired, you will need to replace the faulty HDD - buy new one on your own. There are variety of options - vendors you can choose from. You can get it online or from PC retail store, or from HP parts store http://partsurfer.hp.com/

You need HDD with the very same size as the current one or bigger (small will not work) - e.g. if your current HDD is with 500 GB capacity, your new HDD/SDD must also be 500 GB or with bigger capacity.  I recommend you consider HDDs with RPM 7200 as they as slightly faster, 5400 RPM is slower >> https://www.computerhope.com/jargon/r/rpm.htm

*** How to replace the faulty HDD with new HDD:  please, find info and instruction in your computer's manual or watch YouTube videos examples for your HP model.

If you do not want to do this on your own, please bring the computer (or ship it) to HP Authorized Service Center where the technicians will do this for you. If you are not sure where such a center is located, check these or contact HP for assistance in finding the nearest one for you:

3) Last part - once you replace the faulty component - you will need to reinstall back your operating system -

let me know if you need assistance on how to reinstall Windows.

Post your full HP product model and product number (p/n). Here is how to find it >> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00033108

Please, let me know how it goes and do post back if you need assistance. Looking forward to your feeback/reply.

Hi @AustinToth53

This is just a test, not a remedy. If the test fails, this means there is a problem with the hard disk drive.

Your solution is the same (similar to) as the one posted above.

If you need specific assistance, I will need you to post details about your operating system and computer model.

I also received the failed Hard Drive Short DST Check.  I was interested in the aforementioned data recovery procedure.

Hi @randalle4

Welcome to the HP Support forum. Thank you for posting !

Here are some instructions with options to access the data stored on the HDD - since the HDD is corrupted, there is no guarantee it will work:

You will need :

- either 1 empty/blank USB thumb drive   OR  1 empty/blank DVD disk

- Linux based operating system - free to download - e.g. Ubuntu or Linux Mint

You can directly download Ubuntu Desktop from Ubuntu's web site:

Download the x64 ISO > https://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

Once ready, you need to write the ISO to make a bootable media (e.g. bootable DVD or USB drive). Here is how:

* How to create bootable ISO on USB device >> http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows

or

* How to write ISO to DVD >> http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/burn-a-dvd-on-windows

When ready with the USB drive or with the DVD:

* Enter BIOS (F10)

* Ensure Secure Boot is disabled  (if applicable for your model)

* Ensure Legacy mode is enabled (if applicable for your model)

* Save the UEFI/BIOS changes.

(if applicable for your model) Details>> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03653226

Eventually, please, shutdown the computer using the power button.

Insert the Ubuntu USB thumdrive or the Ubuntu DVD prepared previously

Power on the PC.

As soon as you press the power-on button, keep hitting the Esc button (like tap-tap-tap).

This should open a HP Startup Menu

Choose F9 to open Boot options. Select the thumb drive (or the DVD) as boot option.

Follow the on-screen instructions to run Ubuntu (not install it but try it).

Ubuntu should load. You can try to see if it will be able to mount your existing HDD - use its File Manager app. If possible, you may be able to browse your files and copy what is necessary to a online Cloud storage service or to another device.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for your response.  I will be attempting this procedure hopefully this week and will post the results.  I should be able to follow the instructions above and will post if having any trouble.  Let you know soon as possible.
