hp laptop was purchased with a Windows 10 disc, but with Windows 7 downgrade installed.

Now I am trying to upgrade the OS using this Windows 10 disc. How do I find the product key for it? The sleeve it came in has two different alpha-numeric strings, but no product key.

Would the product key potentially be stored in the laptop and retained after C/ is wiped?

Yes, if the PC came from HP with W7 Pro/downgrade rights from W10 Pro, the W10 Pro product key should be encrypted in the BIOS.

If you run the free Showkey Plus app that I zipped up and attached below, it should show you the installed W7 product key and the OEM W10 product key and the version of W10 the key is good for.

This worked perfectly.  Thank you!

Windows 10 Pro now successfully installed.
