Win7 update KB2952664

Just sharing this experience. It may help someone and I've found help in this HP Forum on other issues.

As a second, backup, machine I have an HP250 G6 Celeron. Purchased in late January (to replace a decade-old XP installation that finally clagged), it came with Win10. I replaced Win10 with an OEM-bought Win7 Pro x64 ISO because I found Win10 impossible to live with.

The Airplane wifi key won't work with that installation setup (see about 50 posts in the Wireless & Networking Forum on this) so I used an external USB3 wifi adapter as a cheap, efficient workaround. This worked well.

The monthly Win7 updates from MS arrived a few days ago - thankfully thin on the ground this time. Included as a "major" update is KB2952664. Duly installed on both the G6 and my main machine (an HP250 G5 about 15 months old that came with Win7 Pro x64 pre-installed).

Following installation of KB2952664, the G6 wifi became unstable, with constant dropouts and general cantankerousness. Not so with the G5.

Uninstalling KB2952664 from the G6 returned its' wifi to stability. This update is still on the G5 and my small LAN is working as it had before the advent of KB2952664.

My *tentative* conclusion is that KB2952664 does not much like external wifi USB3 adapters, or at least my specific Edimax adapter.

Have you checked to see if there is an updated driver for your USB Wireless Adapter?

Thanks for the reply.

Oh yes, I'd hunted the latest driver. Nobody is much writing or upgrading drivers for Win7 now. Not a surprise of course, but MS putting out Win7 upgrades that interfere, unwittingly or not, with current drivers is best described as a hazard, in my view.
