PC Hardware and Diagnostics for Windows (sp84148)

HP Recommended
HP Pavilion 15-inch Displays
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I downloaded the PC Hardware Diagnostics for Windows (sp84148) software from the HP Support Assistant but my Anti-Virus software says it has an infected file (Record-Protect?).  What do I need to do?

That file is located at: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp84001-84500/sp84148.exe

 and is listed as:

12/06/2017 08:01AM 123,746,472 sp84148.exe

12/06/2017 08:01AM       2,787 sp84148.html

I submitted that URL to  www.VirusTotal.com     for checking.

I did not submit the file -- VirusTotal has a file-size limit for uploading.

Just 1 out of 66 anti-virus scanners, namely: Blueliv -- reported it as "Malicious"

The file is reported as "Clean" for all the other scanners:

Which anti-virus program are you using?

Is it using the most-current anti-virus "definitions"?

I am using McAfee Internet Security which has the latest updates.  I checked the file (sp84148) and no problem was detected.  It was when the file was installed that it detected the record-protect**** (I don't know the additional characters) file as a threat and quarantined it.

I received an e-mail from the HP Support Forum Team asking if the response had solved my problem but I haven't received a reply to the follow up information I supplied so it hasn't yet.

My copy of MacAfee also complained that the file contains a virus.

This seems to be a problem with McAfee.  Have any other users experienced this?  Is this a problem with the file or the Anti-Virus program?

I think HP themselves needs to investigate and report in on this. While it is likely a false positive, there have been numerous times that a vendor somehow distributed a virus in their programs.

I agree but no one from HP seems to be interested in this.  Do they read this thread?

Maybe, but definitely not "officially".

Some contributors are employed by HP, and may "escalate" a posting to an official HP department.

I think that McAfee -- being the only 1 anti-virus program, out of many, to "flag" it -- should be contacted.

They can download the file, and do their own testing.

While I agree with you in theory, I would hope that HP would be concerned enough to check it out. I've been programming since the 70's and have seen a number of stories where a vendor would have a product that somehow gets infected.

HP has not impressed me with their technical support on their laptops or network printers. I purchased an original Spectre x360 when they first came out this time last year at CES. From what I can tell, they have released multiple versions of my laptop to apparently fix problems with the original design without any consideration for those who have purchased previous models. The touchpad is a good example and the original ads showed people using a stylus yet the original version did not support it, which to me is almost false advertising.
