Given this, had win 8 on it reason I was given it was failed installation of win 7
Log in ok, then come up with selection options windows 7 or windows 8 if you let it select it will after a second and load the starting windows ect and then command prompt comes up to recover from a failed installation press enter I have win 7 disc converted to ISO on a external dvd and plug that in ,it spins up but nothing it just keeps coming up x=\$windows-BT\Windows \system32>

To assist you better I would require more information regarding this.
- Did you try the installation from HP created recovery media or order them and perform the installation?
- Did you run complete system diagnostics on the computer to eliminate hardware failure?
For starters, please run complete system diagnostics from this link to ensure that the hardware is fully functional. Link: http://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c03467259
Please follow the option “Opening the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI”. If any component fails please contact HP phone support to get the unit serviced.
If it passes please order recovery media for reinstalling windows on the computer by contacting HP phone support again.
Step 1. Open link: www.hp.com/contacthp/
Step 2. Enter Product number or select to auto detect
Step 3. Scroll down to "Still need help? Complete the form to select your contact options"
Step 4. Scroll down and click: HP contact options - click on Get phone number, Case number and phone number appear.
They will be happy to assist you immediately.
Then follow the most relevant option that best describes the computer model, to perform a system recovery from this link: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03489643
