PCs go to sleep; screens turn off.
The monitor will not display until Windows is loading, so you are likely to see nothing on the screen until then.
So, since the screen will be blank until then, I don't understand how it is going to sleep when you connect a Lenovo laptop.
When you have that laptop running, go into Display Settings and look to see if both the laptop screen and the external monitor are showing. If the external monitor is not, this could be due to a fault in the Lenovo laptop -- and you would have to check with them about that.
