Envy 27 Monitor - w6a12aa
macOS 10.12 Sierra

I've been having some troubles getting my new MacBook Pro to connect to this monitor. Video didn't work at all, I was getting errors about power draw and an incompatible Thunderbolt cable despite using the one included with the monitor, and I was at wit’s end until I found this little workaround.

Apparently, when the video-requesting device requests too large of a power draw, the monitor doesn’t know what to do. The new MacBook Pro 15” charges at 90W, or at least that’s the rating on the charger. When only connecting only the monitor, nothing works. However, simply connecting another charger kicks literally everything into place. The video connects and stays connected. When the charger is unplugged, the mac continues to charge off of the monitor’s power supply, and will not error again until the connection is broken.

I have an HP Spectre x260 15” (87W charger) as well, and the workaround works fine for that laptop too. I’m assuming that most laptops that charge over the 60-something watts that this monitor outputs should see similar results.

HP, Please fix this.
