Solved!

Maximum RAM in a DV7-7205tx? I'd like to upgrade the RAM in my DV7-7205tx from 8GB to 16GB.

Hi, I'd like to upgrade the RAM in my DV7-7205tx from 8GB to 16GB, but the specifications tell me that the maximum is 8GB. I'm puzzled by this as the DV7-7304tx has just been released with 16GB installed and it has the same processor and same chipset. Can you please explain why the manual tells me that I cannot upgrade my 2x4GB chips to 2x8GB ?

Much appreciated,

Greg

Hi,

My loan machine dv7-7008tx also says 8GB max but few people upgraded to 16GB w/o problem. I won't do this because it's a loan machine. The following site also "approved" it:

   http://www.crucial.com/upgrade/HP-memory/Pavilion+DV7+Series/Pavilion+dv7-7008tx-upgrades.html

Regards.

Yeah, thanks; I saw that site and a couple of others but I want to hear the reason or get a confirmation from HP first before I invest $$$s in new RAM.

Cheers,

Greg

Hello gregjohnmason,

The answer from HP is going to be the one you have already received. The maximum amount of RAM the machine is specced to take that HP approves is 8gb.

Anything above or beyond that is an "at your own risk" situation.

Thanks for the feedback, but it doesn't really satisfactorily answer my question about why a similarly specced machine with the same OS, same motherboard, same chipset, same CPU, same graphics card, same number of DIMM slots can accept a "recommended " 16GB.

Any ideas?

Could be a typo, misprint or something like that. What is the other machine that you are talking about? I can then look into it further.

Hi - it could be a misprint; after all, the specs oroginally up for the DV6-7215tx listed GT650 graphics and BD Writer, and that was wrong.

As per oroginal post, the machine with identical specced chipset is the DV7-7304tx. It comes shipped with 16GB RAM, but DV7-7205tx states maximum RAM is 8GB (comes shipped with 2x4GB SIMMs).

If you can clarify that might help.

Cheers,

Greg

Thank you,

I somehow overlooked that in your original post. Let me look into this and get back with you, as soon as I can.

Here's the thing.  If Crucial recommends the memory it is guaranteed to work.  If not, they will take it back with no expense to you according to their ads.  I would call their Customer Support.

While not conclusive, the following information firmly suggests that the dv7-7205tx is capable of 16GB (2 X 8GB) of memory.

HP's Part Surfer for the Product Number: C7E80PA - Model Name: HP ENVY DV7-7205TX NOTEBOOK PC lists;

HP Part# 670034-001 / 8GB 1600Mhz PC3-12800 memory module (SHARED)

and from the HP ENVY dv7 Notebook PC - Maintenance and Service Guide;

Two customer-accessible/upgradable memory
module slots

DDR3-1600-MHz dual channel support
Supports up to 16384-MB system RAM

Supports the following system RAM
configurations:

16384-MB (8192-MB×2; not supported
on computer models equipped with a 32-
bit operating system)

12288-MB (8192-MB×1+ 4096-MB×1;
not supported on computer models
equipped with a 32-bit operating system)

8192-MB (8192-MB×1 or 4096-MB×2;
not supported on computer models
equipped with a 32-bit operating system)

6144-MB (4096-MB×1 + 2048-MB×1;
not supported on computer models
equipped with a 32-bit operating system)

4096-MB (4096-MB×1 or 2048-MB×2)

2048-MB (2048-MB×1)

and

(Page 28 - Chapter 3 - Illustrated parts catalog)

Memory modules (2, PC3, 12800, 1600-MHz):
Component                           Spare part number
8-GB memory module          670034-001
4-GB memory module          641369-001
2-GB memory module          652972-001

The OP needs to open the memory bay and verify if 1 or 2 memory modules are installed and what the part number(s) is/are. If a single p/n 670034-001 is installed, the system should have no problem taking another 8GB module as the maximum for the motherboard is listed at 16GB. If two p/n 641369-001 modules are installed, something is fishy as it diverges from the HP Part Surfer information.
