After updating my laptop to the new windows 10 a few days ago, ive only just noticed that the audio on my laptop does not work. I regurlaly connet my laptop to my TV using a HDMI cable so ive only just noticed this when i tried to play music without it.
Ive tried all the suggested ideas on this forums; ive tried the device manager and tried to see if it needs an individual update but it says the driver is up to date, ive tried troubleshooting but again it says all drivers are working fine. It seems the problem is with the software on my laptop as when i connect it to my TV it works fine but when i try connecting earphones, it is the same problem.
This is becomming very frustrating and i am thinking of reverting back to windows 8 to try and fix the problem.

Hi there @femotilla,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome! This is a great site to get answers and ask questions. I have looked into the issue you are having with your Sound after the Windows 10 Upgrade.
Have you tried in the Device Manager to update the driver that is currently installed?
Have you tried to select "Find New Hardware" in the Device Manager?
Have you tried to uninstall that current sound drivers? If not please try the following:
1. Uninstall the sound driver in Device Manager
2. Restart your Notebook
3. Reinstall the driver.
You can use the HP Support Assistant for drivers. Here is a link to the HP Support Assistant if you need it. Just download and run the application and it will help with the software and drivers on your system that need updating for Windows 10.
Please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices, as these could cause some issues.
Have you tried the Disable and then Enable method?
If not, you can find this and other troubleshooting steps in the HP Notebook PCs - No Sound from Speakers (Windows 10, 😎 document.
Here is another document called Resolving Headphones and Headset Problems (Windows 8). This document has more troubleshooting steps. Shows you how to uninstall the driver amongst other steps.
Please follow these provided troubleshooting steps, re-post and let me know how everything went.
Have a great day!

Hi, I have exactly the same problem, and like you have followed all the online advice re: updating drivers etc; and like you I am told that everything is up to date - but still no sound - no volume - and yes, I've ensured that mute isn't on! Please can somebody help those of us with this problem?

Don't konw if it will help, but our new laptop with Windows 10 suddenly stopped making any noise through the speakers.
The set up is very simple - la[top connected to the LAN via a cable with a second display - a Dell E177FP monitor.
On digging around I found that Windows 10 has somehow decided that audio playback should be directed to the display monitor. So there was no sound.
Changing the defauld playback device to the internal speakers meant that we now have sound again.

I have tried all the suggested fixes with reinstalling drivers and resetting the computer disabling and re enabling drivers etc and nothing is working. I normally use my laptop with my tv as the monitor but when its unplugged from tv the no audio works or mic! I even tried reverting back to windows 8 but wasnt able to find where to do that (all resources want to put everything to windows 10) I really dont want to have to take it to a specialist and we all know geek squad is way overpriced!!!

I reviewed the post completely. Thanks for your response. @Yangthy, did the steps fix the issue for you. Please let me know. I am always there to assist you.
@Mike_Martinez, Please run audio diagnostics on the computer and check if the hardware is fully functional as mentioned in my previous post.
If the diagnostics pass I would suggest that you backup your files and try to reset the computer by running a Microsoft Push button reset that does not cause you to lose data from this link: http://hp.care/2sGcqPU
Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!
To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.
Take care and have a blessed week ahead. 🙂
