C6180 all-in-one Printer

Printer works fine until I lift lid (as to place paper on the glass). Within a few minutes printer throws ERROR: Can not copy, scan, fax power down printer and power back up. Upon doing so, printer is fine once again.

If I use the auto feed to copy or scan, printer works okay.

Lift lid to place paper on glass and then lower lid I can get a copy but within minute or so, here comes the ERROR again.

As long as I dont lift the lid cover, all is good.

Has anyone heard of this weird problem?  Any solutions besides throwing it away and buying new?

Thanks in advance,

Marshall

A very warm welcome to the HP community. A very good day to you. 🙂

I understand that you have an HP Photosmart C6180 All-in-One Printer and the printer gives an error stating "ERROR: Can not copy, scan, fax." Ths happens when you try to use the scanner glass bed to make a copy, scan or fax. The printer works perfectly fine when you use the ADF (Automated Document Feeder). I appreciate your observation and the way you have isolated the issue so far. I'll do my best to help you.

I would like to know the following information to assist you better:

  • Did any changes take place on the printer recently (updates, any other errors, etc.)?
  • What operating system are you using?

I'll first explain the difference between the ADF scanning and the glass bed scanning. In ADF, the paper slides through the scanning bulb. The scanning bulb remains steady. However, In glass bed, the paper remains steady and the bulb moves back and forth to scan. Looks like the scanner bulb mechanism is impacted.

Meanwhile, I recommend you to perform the following steps to isolate the issue and arrive at a fix:

  • Disconnect the power cable from the printer while the printer is still ON.
  • Disconnect any other cables if connected the printer.
  • Press and hold the printer’s power button for 15 seconds.
  • The printer should be directly connected to the wall outlet and not to a surge protector. Reconnect the power cable to print and the printer should power ON by itself. If the printer doesn’t power ON then please manually power it ON.

Please try to look for a possible firmware update through this link. Since I do not know the operating system you're using, I could not send you the direct link for the firmware update.

Lastly, if the issue still persists then you may perform a reset on the printer. I have sent you a private message with the steps to reset the printer.

I hope this helps. Please feel free to let me know what happens. All the best! 🙂
