HP 6520

I bought my dad an HP 6520 several years ago because of the hpeprint feature and the scan to email feature.  It replaced a 6510 that did not have the scan to email feature.

The hpeprint feature always works without fail.  Because he doesn't have a computer and I live 300 miles away so I can print to his printer.

The scan to email function is set to come to my email so he can send me copies of important documents.  It fails far too often.  He can turn it on and off and reset or turn the router on and off and no change.  This might go days or weeks.  Then it will be fine for weeks or months and stop out of the blue.

I've read the suggestions for fixing but one this involves a computer and two we don't want to lose our eprint capability.  Why does this keep happening?  Is there a better solution?  Is there a better printer?
