Product: HP Officejet Pro 7740 Printer

When I bought this printer I was able to use non-HP cartridges.  Then as I understand it, HP slipped something into an update a year or so ago that prevented use of non-HP cartridges.  I've read that some people have found a work around, but nothing I've tried seems to work.  I think I have the right to decide which cartridges I want to use, especially since I bought the printer with that feature intact.  Is there a work around or fix that will allow me to use non-HP cartridges even though the update in question has already happened. I understand it cannot be undone by going back to factory settings, etc.   Thank you
