HP Recommended

I know, I know, "Why on earth are you looking for something that's more than 20 years old?"  Quite some time ago I started to digitize our 35mm slides using my Canon Canoscan 4400F scanner. Well I stopped mid-way through the process and am wanting to finish the job now. The Canon scanner is long gone and I now have an HP Scanjet 8300 scanner that works with my very old Windows XP machine. The only software that I can seem to find to use on the XP machine is Vuescan, which I don't care for. Do you have any help to offer in terms of getting my hands on some of the software that HP used to recommend, e.g. Precisionscan Pro and Photosmart, or an alternative?  The HP support website says to just write HP Support and ask for a CD-Rom but I tried many times to do so and the website just does NOT allow for it, and frankly, I seriously doubt that the offer of getting a CD-rom is still viable, despite what the website says.
